Is there any rational upgrade from an R9 270?

Hey everyone, I just looked at GPU prices and dropped my jaw through the floor. How much money am I looking to get a 50%-100% performance increase? My R9 270 is factory overclocked, really close to 270x levels.

Too much is the sad answer. You could look for a 1050ti in the $250 range but it doesn't meet your requirements, would need to step up to a 1060 or 580 which are massively overpriced atm.

if u troll newegg u can poach a 1060 for around $280 (3gb), they come in stock and go quick.
but ive seen them a couple times this week for 279 (gigabyte) iirc
not a great deal, but..a hell of a lot better than a 1050ti for $250

I would consider a good used r9 390 for a good price, if you can find it. Closest thing to a RX580 8GB/GTX1060 6GB, but should be cheaper by possibly $~200. In some cases the 390 series cards are actually faster with the huge memory bandwidth.

Actually, I just checked, surprisingly there may be some GTX 1060 6GB cards available for ~$350, some new.

A used gtx980, or if you overclock a gtx970 would be a great upgrade, about 2x faster than a rx270.
They would be in the $250 to $300 range.

Saw a 970 go for $170 and a 980 for $275 recently... used of course. The 970 is still a great card.

if you can get 970 for that amount it's worth upgrading no doubt, it's a good card and OCs well, it's not far behind the overpriced 1060s and 580s once OCed

I think anything over $250 for 580/1060 level is crazy,

I helped my brother upgrade from a 270X to an RX 580 back in the fall when GPU prices became reasonable for a brief moment...

At this point the only game to play is wait and watch until The Next Big Thing(TM) that mines better than current cards drops. Then hit the used market like a red headed stepchild as Pascal/GCN4 cards get unloaded. Hopefully the pent-up demand doesn't keep the second hand market in perpetual hyperdrive...

Its shocking to see people recommending used 970's for $250 bucks when I managed to pick up my 980Ti for $316 shipped back in 2016.

I have an old R9 270x and was wondering if it is adequate to work with a Ryzen 5800x + Asus ROG STRIX B550-E MoBo. I will not be playing any games, but will be using for video editing and such. Any advice would be appreciated.

Keep it. Aside from the old, power-hungry architecture, you're not missing anything if you're not a gamer. For video editing, even a weaker card would work - as long as you're not using the GPU for encoding/transcoding or working with 8K.

The r9 270x supports most of dx12. The dx12 features it does not support are also features that a APU / iGPU are not going to be powerful enough to use effectively anyway.

Rembrandt has been speculated to be on par with a GTX 1050 which would put it ahead of a 270X

Thanks to everyone who responded. This makes me feel much better. I just can't afford to spend any more money on this build right now.

Testing outside the case using an old PSU (now I have a brand new EVGA SuperNOVA G3 ready to go!) & the R9 270X, the setup POSTed. I had the reseat the GPU multiple times in different PCI-E slots before it did. So, that gives me confidence that I won't run into too many issues when I do it for real the coming weekend!
