Is there any programs out there that write 0/1 to your hdd so that everything is erased?

oh, they can... just takes a little longer. I've heard cases of them going up to 18 layers deep with of low level formats to recovery data.

If they were determined enough, I think they could.
To make sure they can't, you'd basically have to incinerate it.
That's what the government specs.

A good program would write random garbage... if you make it all 1s or all 0's then it's a lot easier to contrast the magnetics to see what the bit previously was.

though if you're concerned about security you should have everything encrypted too so even if they get it they can't use it.
