Or should I just get a 7970 right now? If its just a rabadge then I dont see a reason to wait for the R9.

7970 is pretty poor value right now compared to a 7950. But yeah it should go down slightly just so retailers can clear them out. Maybe $20-$30 cheaper. That and the never settle bundle should be enough to get them gone vs the 280.

Is there any idea when the R9 280x is suppose to be released? If its not until November then ill just jump on the 7970 right now.

If you do wait, the price of a 7970, even if the R9 is a rebadge, should go down.

I wouldn't count on that. AMD made it pretty clear during its R9 presentation that current HD7000 discounts are steep because they are intended to clear the stock.

When R9 hits, I'll be surprised if any HD 7970s are available.

Take, for example, the HD 6950 - it was practically off the market when the more expensive and similarly-performing HD 7850 arrived.

Prices for the ones left also shot up

That is sort of what I meant. Them clearing stock of the 7970s for the R90s.
