Is there any point to the majority of these threads?

Hell, its not that bad here - its like any other forum in that you have a handful of quite insightful people, a handful of trolls and then the majority in between ;)

The problem is, as the forum for Issues Not Discussed in Polite Company, every thread (whether it starts off reasonably or as a 'Drudge:{name} eats babies' thread) quickly becomes a) polarised, and then b) personal. Sometime I don't see why the moderators don't institute an official point scoring system and be done with it ;)
