Is there any point in upgrading from my XP2500+ Barton core?

I have a Barton core AMD XP 2500+, the Shuttle nForce 2 Ultra, 1 gig of ram, and a Ti4200 graphics card. My computer seems very good and it looks amazing on my Dell 24" 2407 lcd.

I was thinking about upgrading, but I'm not really sure if it's worth it. There's a bunch of hype over new this and new that, but every time I look at the graphs, the FPS are all about 60. I have been getting more than 60 FPS on my computer for years!

My friend at Intel told me that the new stuff they release has been the same as the old stuff, just with a new name. Sounds like I would have to be a fool to throw my money away then!

When will they finally release something new so that I can upgrade? Or should I just keep this machine for longer since upgrading doesn't seem to help me any?

If its fine for you, then keep it. If you play with the computers at best buy or similar stores, and like how they feel, then its probably time for an upgrade. Do you plan on upgrading to Windows7?

Window7 is the new Operating system out to replace Vista. Are you rinning windows or Linux? You never go into any store that has a computer on display? Walmart, Bestbuy, Officemax, etc?

Vista is really bad.

No, I would never go to a store like that.

lol another person beliving the FUD vista is horrible, its honestly a fine operating system, a bit bloated but still worth using over xp, 7 is what vista should of been a bit leaner, and some nice new interface upgrades

Is this a troll post? Did this person just step out of a time machine?

OF COURSE you should UPGRADE. Everyone should, every six months. It's what keeps the tech economy going.

On a more serious note, yes, processors have gotten MUCH FASTER than a lowly Barton 2500+. Same with graphics cards, most modern graphics cards blow away a Ti4200.

Among other things, CPUs are in the midst of a multi-core revolution. No longer are you trapped to use a single CPU core, todays CPUs have FOUR cores, and EIGHT hardware threads. (Core i7)

Video cards have gotten MASSIVELY better, now they do more than a TERAFLOP worth of processing power for under $100, and they do Blu-Ray decoding (UVD2 or PureVideo) on the video card, so your CPU doesn't have to, in the vast majority of cases.

Operating systems (and CPUs and system chipsets) have moved on to 64-bit operation, allowing you to have more than 4GB of RAM.

You want to know how slow and outdated your computer is? Try playing some Blu-ray downloaded rips (MKV files), of something like Planet Earth in 1080P. Modern computers can play that like nothing, but older computers like yours won't be able to play it without dropping frames and breaking up the audio.

Great. This is all that counts.

But what does it actually do that seems so good? You imply that you game (in XP?) at 1920x1200 and get 60fps (in what sort of games?).

This is exactly what I was thinking. This seems like a troll post but it could be legit.

If you are running a bunch of old games and aren't interested in new games then I'm sure you'll be fine until that computer goes bust in a few years. If you are playing new games, then they would have to be something flash based because modern games would crush this setup.

Keep your computer.

Then fire up L4D or FSX on max details or something and get back to us.

i have one of those ! - the XP2500 - Shuttle combination, that is.

i live in Sonoma County & i am still trying to figure out - what is a sea wolf ? i have a lot of experience ocean diving and have never seen anything that seemed wolf-ish. so i could never figure out SSU's team name.

as far as the computer, it sounds like what you have works great. yes you could get a faster video card that will go in an AGP slot (which is what that model of Shuttle has), or a whole new computer.

in Sonoma County there is a Best Buy on Santa Rosa ave. next to the CostCo.

if you can AFFORD a new computer, which means you have the $$, i think it makes sense to keep the money in savings so that when you do need a new computer, you're covered.

the longer you wait, the lower the prices get !! :sun:

unless you're buying DDR RAM. or Foppoli Chardonnay. :)

Jack London mentioned a Sea Wolf in one of his novels. The SSU library proudly dedicated a special room just for Jack London.

What exactly are your beefs with Vista?
What do you do with your computer?
Do you have any interest at all in doing things with modern games or video?

I used to have a system similar to that, had to overclocked to 2.4GHz and it was a screamer. Replaced it with a 2.4GHz P4 and was incredibly let down. Next system was a 1.83GHz Core Duo laptop that blew my Barton out of the water.

Currently, I am using an overclocked Core 2 Duo and the thing is a screamer. Without getting an SSD, I find that day to day tasks are more or less the same really. I mean, without the SSD, how much difference can you notice in how quickly Word opens? It is in everything else though that I notice the difference. Playback of HD video, MULTITASKING, gaming, and really anything beyond the day to day there is a world of difference between your Barton and my Core 2 Duo.

And the new i7s and i5s? Almost just as much of a jump.

Don't get me started on GPUs, you are looking at youy Ti4200 being 7 generations behind the curve.

Troll post.

Come on. Gaming on a fricking Geforce 4 on a 24" monitor. That should be enough of a giveaway. Even old games like Doom3 would demolish that graphics card. As in, you wouldn't need to take screenshots because the entire game will be one.

sounds like a troll... or an arrogant yet ignorant person.
using vista on a barton? wtf are you smoking. i had one of those bartons, good for its time..that was years ago man. that processor is off the charts slow for todays software. its so much slower its just hard to think about. your "friend" at intel?? not sure what they are smoking because cpus have been getting incredibly faster over the last few years. never mind the gpus which are ridiculous now, we are talking new ati cards that can run 12megapixel 6 array screens. theres nothing you can upgrade on that machine, even the lowest end dell is several times faster.

not sure what you were going on about with the 60fps bit, benchmarks are set to stress new video cards, so of course with high settings things are not going to be at 500fps, thats not the point. but even if your dx8 or whatever video card could be forced to run crysis it probably would run at half a frame per second if that. nothings been stagnant about the business at all.
if you dont believe us then fine. shove in a modern video card into a barton system and try to run crysis. there are a few agp cards left. get the agp radeon 4650. tell us what fps you get.

your computer is so far off the charts that its just not worth graphing.

Upgraded from XP1800 to a E5200 and very glad I did, world of difference. That's without taking games into consideration..

I have a Barton 2600+ with a 7600GS AGP that tears UP gaming. Oblivion on HIGH at 1440 x 900 gets 125fps, Counter Strike Source on high gets a whopping 189fps, WoW is smooth as silk. L4D doesnt even make it sweat, what are you all smoking, that Barton will last another 6 years and run everything you can throw at it! Don't upgrade, you're fine for years to come. No worries.
