Is there any personal transportation device that doesn't look ridiculous?

Every personal transportation device out there seems to make you look incredibly ridiculous or douchey (think Gob on his Segway). The one where you ride around on your luggage was probably the worst I've seen:

Is there any personal transport device that seems semi-respectable, yet won't result in broken bones if you fall off?

THIS! This right here! You took the words right out of my mouth. Back when I was 12 or so I had an idea of wheels that popped out of your shoes. Then in 2008 when I was at O'hare airport I seen a couple kids with shoes that did just this passing by everyone in the airport.

My 14yo has asked for Heelies for Christmas...I wonder if they're coming back in popularity.

Depends on uncoordinated and/or how frail you are.

Falling off a bike in traffic can be seriously problematic, but if you're non-spastic enough to actually fall off rather than simply falling over with your legs tangled in the frame, falling off a bike is unlikely to actually break anything... That aside, and despite being middle-aged, I thought hoverboards were really pretty cool (if way too expensive) but there was that little issue with the batteries... Though on the plus side, I don't think even that resulted in any broken bones per se. ;)

What the hell is that thing? I mean, of course I can see that is says "Hover Board", and I'm assuming "no, not really", but exactly what is it and how does it "work"? (And yes, I'm afraid I am too lazy to Google "Mattel hover board".:p)

I'm going to assume there's an implied /s on this post, otherwise you're gonna have to hand in your nerd card at the door.

Exactly where in that text are you suggesting the " /s" should be? I've always thought of myself more along "geek" lines than "nerd", but if you're suggesting that as either one, I should already know what it is, there may well be a button-snipping ceremony in my near future...:( On the other hand, if "W… T… F… ?" and "no, I am simply not going to Google that thing" qualify for what you had in mind by " /s ", then yes, your assumption was correct. :p

i have an electric longboard and electric standup scooter.
works really good in the city. no need for parking, stuck in traffic, or worry about them getting stolen. and i agree that luggage looks awful

But in any event, I wasn't so much thinking " /s " as "W. T. F. ?" ;)

So. You really made me Google it... ( i mean, yes, I got the general idea from the pic you posted, but still had no idea what that Mattel thing was all about, and I thought - foolishly so it appears - that the thread was about actually viable options... But I digress...)

Frankly, even the probably-non-measurable number of nanocalories it took do that weren't really worth the effort.<sigh> What can I say... if not immediately dashing to the nearest movie theater to see a (freaking) Michael J. Fox movie about time travel in my junior year of college requires the turning in of a card of any sort, I'd consider it a badge of honor.:p (And when I did eventually see it, I was old enough to think it was "cute", albeit mostly ridiculous...)

Now, if we'd been talking positronic robot brains or lightsabers, I might've caught on, even if I'm a little too old to have ever wanted, much less owned, a non-functional pseudo-version of even one of the latter... And for that matter, even by 1977 and thereabouts, I was several years too old to have been caught dead in a ditch owning a model Starfighter, a Darth Vader helmet, or any of that goofy paraphernalia. (By then I did however already own a few years of Byte back-issues and at least a year's worth of 73 Magazine, if that counts for anything. And at this point, I've totally forgotten when Dr. Dobb's Journal first came out, but I think it was thereabouts or not much later, and I had a number of the earlier issues of that, too.;))

No, you SAW a couple kids. Where did you go to school? My teachers would have failed me for using such poor grammar.

I bet you're a blast at parties :p And I was referencing the actual, fictional hoverboard, that was actually cool, not whatever garbage has/hasn't caught on since then.

For your age though, maybe we should stick with more mundane fare ;)
