is there any downside to owning a dot ORG?

There is a domain that I want. The guy is squatting on the dot com (its a 3 letter url). He is waiting for a payday in the tens of thousands and he can go jump in a lake. I could get the dot org for like $320. I wouldn't use it for non profit purposes though. Does that matter? 320 reasonable, right?

thanks

For fun, what exactly is the dot-com you're looking for?.... There are no rules as to what you do with a dot-org, btw, you can make it a pay site just like a dot-com....

If you don't get what you want, you can always get a dot-biz 😉

(it's a joke people)

Yeah.... uh, just keep an eye on the WHOIS information if you've got time, and maybe he'll let it lapse and you can snatch it up..

in the mean time, just get the .org.... no big deal of a difference...

<< I want KSM dotcom, but the lil $hit wants $11 thousand. >>

thats insane. what about KSM.net .net's are good. I have one and like it.
what does ksm stand for?

I'd rather just buy a domain for $8.95 from places like godaddy.com...

Don't forget if you have a legitmate claim to a domain that a cybersquatter is sitting on you can take them to court and get your domain from them.

the dot net is not avail, its an acronym for a small business that I help my Dad with.

how do ya watch the WHOIS? He probably paid for a bunch of years in advance. Maybe I will get the dot org

KSM.COM is registered until 2005 so you'll have to wait a bit if you want to sneak up on it.

KSM.ORG is already registered by someone else. Did you plan to buy it from them as well?

I can buy KSM.ORG for $299. Here is the email I got from the dot org guy:

I just checked the server logs and yesterday ksm got 273 hits and the
24th
it got 91 hits. What's the deal with the letters KSM?

Anyway, sure, if you pay USD $299.00 and the $20.00 to transfer the
domain
into your name (which will add one (1) more year onto your registration
-
good until 2006) then you have a deal. Or, if you want to transfer the
domain from your registrar yourself and pay them the fees you can wave
the
$20.00 fee from us.

If your ready, go to http://ksm.org/buy.htm and start at step #2.

Regards,

.com .net .org and a relatively new one .cc all function exactly the same.

The just mean commerical, network, and organization (can't remember what cc means).
They have no partiuclar meaning attached to them.

Just that .com is the most famous one.

.edu is the only one that has any specific use attached to it I think.

welll ... slashdot is .ORG

go ahead and buy it before someone else does, or before that guys realize that you're going to make tons of money out of it.

quick, or I'll buy it. Give you .... 5 minutes!

The ".cc" is a commercial extension, but it's actually owned and licensed by the Cocos Islands. It's like the ".tv" extension. Everybody thinks that has something to do with Hollywood, but it's really the country of Tuvalu.

Another one is the .la which I think register fo $100.00 per year or something like that. I forget which country that is for. It would be okay to use I guess if you're from Los Angeles or Louisiana. 😉

I never worry about it too much: i can always find a name I like with .com or .net but it does seem that the bastard resellers are buying up more and more domains. A friend of mine just bough a domain for $1,500.00. What a friggin rip-off.

People expect big money for short URL's like ksm.com. Three letter domains will always hold a "premium" because they are short and easy to remember. If you don't want to pay the $11K and you don't want to pay $300 for ksm.org, you need to start thinking about alternatives.

I am thinking about alternatives, KSMonline.com is not a bad idea. There are a couple of variations I could do too. Thanks for all the help BTW.

A guy I know sold osdn.com for $100k 🙂. Some guy called him up and said "How about parting with that domain for $10k", He said "Make it a $100k and it's done", the buy replied with "I'll see you tommorrow morning".

How sweet is that!

shiz....... i sold it to that guy for only 50 bucks :-\ i guess i got a raw deal

check out this email exchange I had w/the owner of the dot com. Soemthing tells me that he is full of it.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, albeit mis-informed.
I registered this domain almost seven years ago for my personal
business use and a web site has been active there ever since.
Last year I had a number of people tell me that I ought to see
if it would sell. I tried it and it was slow for awhile.
I had an agreement to sell it to a company at 2 WTC the first
of September 2001. The deal never had time to be consumated.

Maybe I will just continue to use the domain myself for another
seven years. If a good deal comes along, great. If not, I don't
see any big loss as I still have a need for a domain.

Cheers,
