I am doing a paper on monopolistic and dominant pricing company. I chose DELL as my company, and I need to find a small firm in DELL's market. Is there any mom and pop computer store left? or what other "small" firms that u guys suggest?

Thanks

maybe it's a midwest thing, theres a bunch here too
they all suck though (unless you're looking for stuff like old ram and small hard drives)

z0mb13, yes there are a few "mom & pop" computers stores left. Since you mention Dell's "market," are you talking about TX or the world?

Im talking bout the whole US..

if I choose a small mom and pop store, I can show how DELL's dominance can put them out of business, so the impact is more dramatic.

If I choose a big company such as Gateway, the impact is less dramatic.

so can I get a particular company name?

Thanks guys

Certainly.

It is true that many went out of business, but eventually it balances out. The computer industry is still alive on some level, so when things crashed.. any establishment that wasn't well off died, sending people to the businesses that were still around. Thus, they continue to stick around.

A couple in the Portland, OR area..

Well... lol

I don't think you can claim Dell is a Monopoly. Too much competition.

There's quite a few of the M&P Stores in S.FL (to add to the list). I think the question would be do mom and pop stores compete with Dell (and IBM, and Gateway, and HP/Compaq) on Price? And the answer is, if they do, they are probably scamming the customer in some form(just a hunch).

So you don't want to use those guys as proof that Dell isn't a monopoly? Why exactly?

What about places like MWAVE, NewEgg, and GoogleGear(with it's new name), with good customer service and great prices? They certainly compete with the big guys. Many folks here buy their parts from them and build their own systems instead of using Dell.

Mom&Pop stores are left being niche shops (service/convenience) mainly. But there IS a potential to build on that. Dell started out as a small operation out of a garage, IIRC. It just takes luck and hard work how much of each is left for you to decide.

I'd have to say the PC business is one of the most competitive businesses there is. And that's why it's difficult for a Mom&Pop store to succeed.

I think you should focus on something else...

There are a ton of them in the DC metro area. There are at least 5 just in the town I live in alone, some even in the same shopping center.

Computer Deli.........I get stuff from ththeir shop in Bloomington all the time. They stock tons of stuff and have some great in store deals.

They are all modders and overclockers. Very nice people to deal with.

I know of 3-4 locally but other than something cheap like cables I don't buy anything frmo them. They are simply not competitive with online retailers when it comes to hardware items of any kind. Oh, I will use them for a case to save on shipping but that's it. They tend to mark things up like 30% on an online retailer from what I can tell.
