Is there any better value in a PDA than the Palm Vx right now?

A friend of mine wants to buy one, used or new doesn't matter. She doesn't want to use it for internet access or anything, just your basic productivity stuff. I'm thinking the Palm Vx would be a great buy since it has a rechargeable battery, good accessory support if she decides to get a keyboard or whatever, etc. They seem to be fairly cheap on EBay right now, ~55 shipped seems to be the median.

Damn I remember when the Palm Vx was the top of the line and demanded a $449 premium now it's 1/10th it's original value :(

If her budget was a little larger I'd get a Palm m130 or Sony Clie but a Palm Vx should be fine for basic tasks although it may not have the most recent Palm OS.

new? because the battery is built in, used ones would have batteries with very little life left i think.

but yea, innovation has been stagnant at palm, their new ones aren't much better then their vx.

i remember they had a claudia sschiffer edition for 399! purple.

I got my Palm Vx at a pawn shop for $100 at a time when they were still being sold in stores. I haven't used it as much as I thought I would when I got it. I mostly play Freecell on it while I'm between classes. ;)

edit: The power button on the Palm Vx will break from overuse. There is some hack that you can use to make one of the other buttons the power button. That's the first thing you ought to do if you end up getting it.

The number of recharges the li-ion battery can go through certainly ought to last for several years, don't you think? Are you sure the battery is not replaceable?

i have no idea if its replaceable. my guess is they wouldn't solder the damn thing in, but you'd have to crack open the case?

i have no idea:)

but ussually the things get charged everyday in cradle.

It is possible (sort of), but you have to crack open the case which was very difficult for me to do and now my Palm is permanently scarred :(

GHT sold the batteries for them when I got mine.

Why is the m130 so great? The color screen is cool, I suppose, but is there any other outstanding benefit?

Edit: Weird, I could've sworn your original post was in here when I quoted.

ieww, i'd go visor before buying a plastic palm. palms only advantage is their slim metal cased models.

Because...? I've had a Palm IIIxe (plastic case) for a while now and that thing is pretty sturdy.

oh because they shrunk the screen so theres no justification for a big plastic case anymore. the 3x you had was slightly less then pocket size right? well less then comfortable.

I had a Palm IIIx (my first real PDA!!) and it was solid like a rock. I would prefer one that used replaceable batteries.

After going through dozens of batteries for my Palm IIIxe, I would prefer one that has rechargeable batteries. :p I should just break down and buy a battery charger and some batteries, I really should.

Anyone been using a Vx for a couple years? Do your batteries still hold a decent charge?

Like I said, I should. It's just one of those things you never get around to doing.
