I have two rare DVD's that I'd like to save as well as one VHS movie. I'm a complete noob when it comes to saving video but would like to know how to do it when cases like this come up in the future. I'd like to just start off with putting a DVD to DivX/avi format since I don't have a capture card yet, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Gordian Knot. For DVD archiving can't beat this site: doom9

(edit) don't forget to check out their really nice guide on how to fit a full dual-layer 9GB DVD onto one DVD-R, while keeping all the extras. Highly recommended original and third party tools

DVD2SVCD is a wonderful program...............well worth learning it. Not only can you watch the results on a PC but also on a stand alone DVD player.

tried it, didn't like it, you have to run a server/client naming scheme with tcp/ip on your local machine and then it flakes out really bad with xp. I only got it to encode one time, and it left out about 30min in the middle of the movie.
