COD2 Admins on strike

I haven't played COD2, but are the bugs that bad or is this because of the cheating?

too bad a strike won't do anything. its not like we pay to play online.
they already got our money. they could care less what happens after that.

why is PB like the only anti-cheat software out there? with cheating being such a rampant problem, yu'd think that anti-cheat software would be in demand and people would be making it to make money. or is that part of the problem? companies like Activision/Raven don't want to spend the money on the software?

the other thing is that PB doesn't catch 100% of the cheats or people always find ways around it or PB just can't keep up with the cheating loser bastards.

It is impossible to detect 100% of cheats. It cannot be done. Current systems work like antivirus software, depending on signiture updates regarding new cheats.

I haven't played CoD2. But I know in source cheating accusations are way overblown. Its not so bad now that VAC is finally out, but people seem to think that system is broken because they feel its impossible that anyone could possibly have better reflexes then them. I keep getting accused of hacking, and I'm not even that good at the game. But the truth is, I pretty much never spec some one accused of hacking and see it as actual hacking anymore. Doesn't mean they aren't, but if I can't tell I assume they aren't.

The trouble is, any heuristic approach is going to give you false positives. And when you're dealing with permament bans like the VAC system or I think the PB hardware system uses, you can't permament ban some one based on a guess. There are third party server additions available for source at least that can make some good guesses, but again those are going to ban for false positives.

I think valves system is pretty good, the punishment is harsh to make up for deficincies in the system. I thought RtCW which used PB was the best, but I think they just had less players and therefore less cheaters to deal with.

Try punkbuster?

how can you try punkbuster when the game doesn't utilize it? why do people who have no knowledge about a subject feel they need to post?

as i said before, punkbuster doesn't catch all of the cheaters either.

Try other games then that utilizes punkbuster, and servers that uses PUNKBUSTER. I play RTCW:ET. So I'm coo :)

there aren't very many modern games that use PB. it seems more and more games are being released without any anti-cheat software and its very very bad.

You said it yourself, they have your money. Refuse to purchase games without anticheat.

Where there's a will, there's a way. And there will ALWAYS be the will to cheat. While you or I may not understand the drive to want to play a game without challenge, there are [unfortunately] plenty of people out there who find that sort of "playing" fun and amusing.

I'm going to assume that for a developer to utilize PB protection, they have to pay some sort of premium to PB. That's just one more cost going into the development of the game so why pay that when you can just leave it up to the admins of servers to do it for free?

but the thing is, the admins are either hardly there or don't bother.

With all games, you will always have cheaters. I have been accused of cheating many many times in my CS days. (sometimes even banned)

Yes its annoying but you have to forget it and move on.

While it is true that many people dont hack that are accusesd of it becuase of their skill..there ARE a lot of people that do cheat. People throw around the cheat word a lot when they get owned..but let me tell you....people can get pretty good at covering up there cheating ways.

I admin on two gaming servers and I have seen more then enough hacks to go around. The funniest are the ones that wall hack but they know we are watching so they try and fake like they dont know where people are...They always slip up eventually.

Well, as is typical on the subject of cheating/hacking, this thread diverges into two groups with no middle ground. It starts off with the knee jerk response that it's his problem and that cheating isn't really the "big deal", thus making pointless an informed discussion on how pervasive a problem this remains.

Agreed. The problem is that it is difficult to ascertain exactly how rampant the problem is because the hackers write the code to trick the server. Add to this the fact that there is a new cheat on a regular basis and you have to believe it goes on much more than people would like to believe.

One game I have played where it was obvious when someone was cheating was halo2 on Xbox. When someone cheated there it was using the standby glitch, which would cause every other player's screen to go to a re-establishing connection message. Judging by the amount of times this happened while playing Halo2 (probably 40+% of the games over the few months I played regularly). That alone would lead me to believe that cheating is an extremely common thing in all online gaming.

The one good thing is that a very skilled player can still beat cheaters rather easily, depending on the cheat. See, these guys cannot use a full atuo headshot hack with their sniper rifle or they will get kicked & banned quickly from a number of servers. Thus, they use less intrusive hacks like colored skins & the like, which lets them see other players very easily. These guys are not tough to take out, given you are quick with your aim & move well while taking them out.

Anyhow, good luck to you all in your gaming experience & if you know someone who cheat, talk to them about it & see if you can get them to stop.

Or, you're just really bad at the game.

Sorry, but 99% of the time people accuse others of cheating online, it's just because you're getting beaten. Punkbuster does a pretty good job of keeping cheaters in check, and while sure, there are some out there, most of the time it's just someone better than you.

so when a guy comes around a corner with his gun aimed directly at me as he turns the corner and starts shooting, he's better than me? or when a guy gets headshots on every kill, he's better than me? or when a guy can't be killed even when he is afk and you unload several clips into him and he doesn't die, he's better than me?

sorry, but 75% of the people who use that excuse are trying to cover their cheating tracks (i can pull percentages out of my ass too).

I had friends in College who were so good they head shot almost every time. Some were Korean BTW. They would actually compete as to which would be accused and kicked off of sites first. Let me just say, that none of them cheated. They just played an ungodly amount of time.

I've been playing CS for years and I think cheating is pretty rare now. It was pretty bad around 1.4-1.5 but in source VAC has it under control, but get a sick score and you're still pretty much guaranteed to be accused of cheating. My problem is that my play style kind of looks like i'm cheating. When i go around a corner, i aim in advance to where i expect the player to be (or where i know he is because of footsteps) before i round the corner. It looks like i'm aiming through the wall.

When someone is owning you and you're chasing him to see if he's cheating, you WANT to see proof of cheating, you don't want to see that he's actually better than you. You believe what you want to believe.
