Is there an easy way to dis-charge batteries?

I have some AA rechargable batteries for my digital camera... the manual said to complete discharge them before re-charging... so I was wondering if there's an easy way to discharge them?

would it work if u just left it in the recharging unit but left it unplugged? im assuming the reverse4d polarity would empty out the battery, or maybe thats just a myth. anyway , just leave ur digicam on for now. by the time u get a good response, it'll be discharged.

I was just reading in a thread about NiMH batteries where someone was talking about a battery condition where it discharges the battery totally so you don't get the "memory affect"
I realize it doesn't apply for NiMH batteries, but I think it's what you're looking for.

Turn the flash all the way up, and snap a couple dozen pictures. Otherwise, there are some chargers that discharge the battery before they charge them.

Take a lightbulb - e.g. a torch bulb, and connect it to a single battery. Leave it connected until it stops glowing - the bulb doesn't have to be the same voltage as the battery - it will work fine if the bulb is rated 2 - 3x the battery voltage.

What you should never do is allow a group of batteries connected together to be completely discharged.

Never put batteries into a charger backwards either - this will discharge them, but the charger will then 'reverse charge' them once they have become exhausted. This is the same thing that will happen if several batteries are discharged together and one of them is weaker than the others. Reverse charging will very quickly destroy the battery.
