For my Blackberry, I use 320x240 mpeg4 at 384kbps with AAC stereo at 96kbps. That's theoretically 3.6MB/minute, so movies are around 400MB. It looks alright on a tiny screen.

I checked and your device has a 800x480 pixels 4.3" screen, so using settings similar to mine would most likely look bad. Also, you're recompressing video that's already been compressed, which doesn't help. Encoding from the source DVD would give better results.

Best thing would be to keep the same video and just reencode the audio to mp3 or aac.

That's what i've done for most of them. Some of the more "cartoonish" ones looked fine when I reduced the file size though. It's just tough figuring out which settings work and which do not.

I was just hoping there was an easy converter out there like there is for the iphone. You just pick the file size and bam, it spits out a file that looks fine on the iphone and with the filesize you choose. (With certain limitations of course)

My recommendation is that you find an x264 front end, IE, handbrake or Staxrip. Then, use crf mode for your encode. (you may need to select a profile as well.)

x264 is the BEST encoder available right now, which translates into small files at good quality.

as I said though

That's the problem though. I need to pay for a codec to use anything x264 and any other audio aside from MP3 which I prefer not to do.

I just decided to say the hell with it because after playing with it till i'm blue in the face, the video either looks completely horrible and isn't watchable or I make the files slightly different in file size and it isn't worth it.

Humm, that is retarded. Most things that I've read state that Archos uses libavcodec for video decoding, which is, opensource. And does support H.264 decoding natively.

Well, if you are unable to play H.264 videos (Have you tried a baseline encode?) Then I would suggest going with an xvid front end instead. The quality is crap compared to x264, but that really is the second best non-h.264 option.

Every h264 video I've tried to play has a pop-up prompting me to go to Archos to buy the plug-in to play said video.

How can I make my ARCHOS become compatible with MPEG-2, H.264 and AAC formats?
You need to purchase optional software plug-ins and install them on your device.
These plug-ins are available here on our Website.

You will find the 2 following plug-ins:
- Cinema plug-in to play MPEG-2 and VOB video files, as well as AC3 audio files (5.1 sound),
- Video Podcast plug-in to play H.264 video files, as well as non protected ACC audio files.

What format are you starting with?

Have you tried Mediacoder? I've been using it to re-encode my .avi and .mkv's to put on my ipod, it's free and works great.

AutoGK was working well until I tried it on my main rig which runs Win7 instead of XP.

I may have to give mediacoder a try next. I just want something that works.

You could run a XP VM on your main box and continue to use AutoGK?

I'm using AutoGK on 3 different Win7 rigs without issue. Perhaps some other codec app/driver is at fault?

The easiest way is to first rip the DVD using something like AnyDVD and then encode using Handbrake using any of the presets (there are settings for small screens such as PSP and iPod Touch/iPhone etc)

If you're running Linux-distro-of-your-choice or MacOS X, if you have VLC installed you can skip the AnyDVD (or whatever else) step.
