An app? No.

A built-in feature? Yes (Hit the home button and power button simultaneously).

Isn't that the same button combination on android as well as osx? Who copied who?

It certainly wasn't a feature of my thankfully-retired Droid Incredible. Would have been handy, but not a feature at the time (Android 2.3). Been on the iPhone since day 1.

On a nexus 7, running jelly bean... To take a screenshot do this --

Press the volume down and the power button at the same time.

I am going out on a limb and thinking that a phone would be the same combo? Who knows... Try it I guess. You have to hold the keys in for about a second tho.

My Nexus S on 2.3 was unable to take screenshots out of the box. I'm guessing iOS had it first

Back in Android 1.6 I had to root and install an app to take a screenshot of my screen. Apple is definitely the WINNAR in this case :D

Hold the power button and press the "screen shot" option on my Nexus.
CyanogenMod has it done the correct way IMO.
