Is there an app that's only for transferring files between users?

I would love AIM for file transfer if it actually worked. I don't know why half the time it doesn't. You'd think that in the year 2004, when a person says, "Oh, I'll send you that file," he wouldn't have to think "But it's too big for email, and he's not on my network, and what if aim doesn't work, and I don't want to setup a FTP site just to do this, and he's not advanced enough to use hotline..."

Seriously, what's the easiest way to transfer files of 10-200 megs between people on the internet.

EDIT: Okay, I'm going to clarify my situation cause I'm sure this happens to you guys too. Some person comes over to my place. Usually this person has the computer abilities of my sister. They write papers, they use aim, they surf the net, liste to music, and they say things like "Anandawhatatech??"

Anyway, I show them some cool movie clip, some music, some PDF, who knows. But it's cool. And then they say, "Oh, could you burn that to a CD for me?!"

Now, I know CD-R's are cheap, but I have a broadband connection and they have a broadband connection. The file is only 50megs and it just annoys me to burn a CD-R when it should be amazingly simple to send them the file over the internet.

So how do I send a 50meg file to the average person without scaring them.

Oh, and I thought of the P2P thing and it doesn't work. Waste is going to scare people considering I've used it before and I just downloaded it and with it's key generating, I got annoyed at it (what hope does my sister have). Maybe DCC in irc. That might work.

AIM works fine for me as long as both users have their computers set up properly... including port forwarding if you have a router.

But yeah, I agree with you... it would be nice to have a program dedicated to person to person file transfers... no hubs, no servers... just two people connected to eachother. No chat software built in or anything like that, just pure file transfer so we can both open up the program, I can either have users setup with their IP address or whatever, click on their name, and select a file or directory to send.

AIM is decent, but that doesn't work for people who don't use AIM.

Why not use one of the dozens of P2P apps?

If it's a file you created, name it something unusual so nobody but your friend will have cause to download it.

If the file originated from P2P, share the damn thing long enough for your friend to get it.

I tried that on Kazaa a long time ago and for some reason I could never find files from a specific person who was on Kazaa at the same time. I'd search for the exact file name and get nothing.

Something to think of...try using something such as PCAnywhere or GoToMyPC. They have file transfer capabilities that are quite fast.

I just upload everything to my website now. This way, multiple people can get the file and I dont' have to upload multiple times.

set up a ftp server, they are easy and offer the ability to restart d/l where the other person left off in case of a lost connection. serv-u is free for personal use and i have been using it for years 🙂

My ISP doesn't alow setting up an FTP server on a home account. A lot of them are like that. I use a program called fileshare pro it uses htp. It's all password protected. I use it to share files with family and friends, some ISO files 650 to 700 meg. An added bonus is that I only have to install the software on my PC for it to work.fileshare pro home page
