Is there a website that explains what TYPE of music is out there? edit: sample added!

Me and my friend spent last night looking over a ton of music video's. But for a good bunch of them, we couldn't put a name to the type of genre the music comes from. For example, i know just saying 'Techno' these days doesn't say much, as there is probably like 50 different kinds of techno these days.

Is there a website out there that tries to catalog all the genre of music, with perhaps an audio demonstration of that kind of music? Cause i got a ton of music on my HD and i'm not sure what to call a lot of it. I can post some examples if you want.

EDIT:
Added an example cause i'm really not sure what genre this song would fit in. Maybe someone can figure it out? You can listen to it HERE

Hm as nice as that chart is, it doesn't tell me much cause it doesn't let me listen to an example of that kind of music.

Well, find out what groups are in what genres

then fire up your favorite MP3 obtaining program

or go to cdnow for samples

Heh I agree. But sometimes its good to know what i'm listening to - especially those strange songs that i simply have *no* clue where they might fit into. I'll load up an example to see if anyone can fit it.

And I don't use any mp3 obtaining software anymore.

Added a link to an example song at the top of the page and HERE can anyone figure out what kind of music it might be?

And Ndee, thanks for the link. i'm looking over it now

that link was helpful but still didn't really give any examples to how the music sounds - only listed some artists. I don't want to go out and buy a thousand CD's 🙂

allmusic.com lists for any artist the style, genre, similar artists, roots and influences, discography and song highlights.
use a file sharing network to d/l one or two song highlights for a particular artist to help you along.
