Is there a way to turn "Shuffle" mode on/off on the fly with the iPod?

I love to select "Shuffle Songs" and just listen to a random song from my entire collection, but when a song from a good artist comes on, I like to listen to a bunch of songs from that particular artist.

Is there any way to turn off shuffle mode on the fly so I can hear only that artist, then turn it back on when I'm done with that artist?

Right.

So say I've got "Shuffle Songs" selected, and it's put all 1000 songs into a random order. On comes a track from a certain artist (say Queen). I feel like listening to Queen for a few songs in a row. I don't want to have to press "Menu" -> Scroll to "Music" and select it -> Scroll to "Artists" -> Scroll to "Queen" and then pick a song.

That's really tedius.

I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to code.

Make a variable that stores "Current Artist", and if you hold "Skip Forward" for X seconds it starts playing a list of the songs by the variable stored in "Current Artist". When you were finished, hold "Skip Forward" for X seconds to restore the previous playlist.

Holding skip forward is already defined as skip ahead in the current song.

I would also like the feature described in this thread, as I have the same problem. However, I don't see how they could fix it other than moving the shuffle part of the settings into the main menu, thus making it one less click to access.

the key is, for it to be feasable, the xml database would have to be ready to be accessed on the fly indefinitely without a slowdown or a need for disk access

Well it doesn't have to be the skip button. There are plenty of other ways to do it :)

How do I email Apple? I can't find anything on their website.

Watch out, they might email you back telling them not to email them with ideas. Then your 8yo daughter will start crying.
