I have tried playing through youtube, but it maxes out at 480p (max setting is 480p). Tried on firefox, chrome, IE, all the same. The movies are listed as HD and play in HD on my android tablet using the google movies app.

I have no problems playing 1080p youtube clips so seems like some sort of imposed limitation.

Double check your receipt to confirm that you purchased/rented the HD version, not the SD one. Have you tried playing them through the Google Play interface?

https://play.google.com/store/movies

Edit: Got more info on this. It apparently varies by title, due to licensing restrictions:

Any video transaction completed on Google Play using your computer will give you the option to rent or purchase in HD. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that all videos can be watched in HD on your computer. You'll need a laptop screen or monitor that meets the display resolution requirements. Select movies and TV shows can be watched in HD on a computer, in accordance with our studio licensing agreements. If a video is available in HD, you can click the settings Settings icon at the bottom of the web player, and change the quality.

Yeah, they are listed as HD in youtube interface. When I play them on my android tablet the HD symbol lights up (though I can't really tell what the actual resolution is).

Seems pretty bogus that it is a licensing issue. 2 of these movies are from Disney Anywhere that are linked to my vudu account and google account. I can watch in HD on my computer using vudu.
