is there a way to fix the output of divx or VLC player to always display at a certain resolution?

in Divx player under aspect ratio there is an option to type in the displayed resolution,unfornatly I have to do this for every file individually each time-it does not save my setting
is there a way to do this and have it set for every file?
Or is there another player I should be using?

i use bs player which is i find better than VLC player because of the much better interface.

can you help me a little more?I see where you can set the aspect ratio to 16:9 but there is no configuration I am finding for setting the resolution-I cannot have black bars I have plasma.

You could try to play with "pan and scan".
