Is there a way to change a hard drive manufacturers name?

Is there a way to change a hard drive's manufacturers name or model that is detected by the bios?

I like using the Samsung SSD Data Migrator software but it only works to Samsung SSD drives.

This is at your own risk, but assuming you ensure the partitions fit, perhaps you can hot swap the drive just before it begins cloning. Perhaps just before the final click of the dialog button.

Other option is to pay... from what I remember many will sell you the full version at a discount.

dd is linux based, I am not sure how easy it is to move from a 500 GB mechanical drive to say a 256 GB SSD drive.

Not easy. I think that EaseUS utility (either "partition master" or "todo-backup") is pretty well-regarded for that though, and it's not a linux-based utility.

You could theoretically do it with DD if you can shrink the partition to <250GB first.

Well, your nickname suggests that you know linux.

As dave pointed out, you must shrink the partition of the first disk (to be copied) to equal or less than the second disk. But the same thing is needed with CloneZilla.

There are other utilities that can do this without the need of shrinking the first disk but I am not sure which ones. I usually shrink the disk and copy the partitions (assuming Windows, the recovery partitions and OS partitions) with the MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.

I was just more curious if there's a way to spoof it as a Samsung drive or change it so I can use the tool since it was so easy. I have used CloneZilla and recall I had to do the resizing. I think I just made the drive smaller with Windows Disk Manager.

As has been said already, I think there are easier ways of doing this! Probably non-proprietary software rather than changing BIOS/ HDD firmware!

Jusr use AOEMI backupper, it will shrink and copy the partition.. and it is free.. It also stores the image compressed.. My boot drive ends up around 23GB from the 70gb partition..

Good point, and I believe it is based on a hash of specific drive components. IOW, it is automated by the OEM, and the hash needs to match reality.
