My memory is getting really bad. I hit a new low at work today and made myself look like a complete idiot in front of my boss and a coworker.

How do I make my memory better?

I read several books on improving memory. They help.
Look online for self-help stuff. Theres tons of them.

But seriously, what's the whole story?

Sleep, read, puzzles, take supplements that help memory, eat fish, use spell check, but most of all

Don't be so hard on your self.

Assume you don't know everything, assume you can know some things, figure out what you know, figure out what you don't know, make educated guesses, weigh all those factors: if speaking up with your knowledge makes sense, do it, if not, don't.

Ways to improve your ability to make educated guesses: do the crossword, play brain age, challenge yourself to memory exercises. I remember hearing it takes average people something like seven times of repetition to remember pure information. When someone tells you their name, or a number, repeat it in your head six times and repeat it back to the person once. Memory is a muscle and you have to exercise it.

I'm glad someone else got it.

But seriously...how do I stop my brain from shrinking?

Keep active. Try things in a different way. When we are young, we are learning alot. The brain is making many new neural whatchamacallits. Now, when we get older we tend to have fixed daily routines. So the brain becomes less flexible, less flexible.

Try learning a new language, it will be hard. Or pick up a new (mentally stimuplating) hobby. Language I think is good, because it requires to memorises words so it'll probably work on the memory aspect of your brain.

There's also a thing called Google. Use it.

I suck at sleeping. Always have.
I love reading but don't have enough time to sit down and read a book. I read tons of wiki's and have been trying to teach myself java and c++. I spend a good couple hours a week reading up on those alone.
The memory supplements hurt my brain.
I <3 spell check.

I don't think I'm being hard on myself, its just getting worse as time goes on.

Put a book on your nightstand and read it every night until you fall asleep.

That's just age I guess. Everyone's memory is different. I have a terrible memory short and long term. I don't think having a bad memory makes you an idiot, it just means you need to come up with better strategies for reminding yourself of things.

This a lot. I am 24 and already practicing memory exercises. The adolescent and child mind remember a lot of random shit, the key is remember pertinent shit at appropriate times. One way to do this is to constantly practice memory exercises, try as hard as you can to remember, and if you can't look it up and remember that.

its my short term memory that is fried

When I was young, I fried lots of brains. Weed, tons of E, then I decided to be a raging drunk for years. Now I'm on crazy pills and those don't help memory either.

Maybe I'll build a new rig. I always feel smart after doing that.

I've felt smart for doing that since I was 14. The reason for my first job was to save up some money to build a rig. Life feels good when you spend $1500 years ago for what someone pays $1800 today. I have a 3.5 year old computer that runs New Vegas and makes me happy, probably makes me happier than all the multi-monitor setups out there.

What makes me happy is to have less money than most and to make rocket ships of enjoyment out of it.
