so... rename/change the extension of the exe file....

its smarter than that

Incorrect.

I tried it no go.

did you rename it to .exe?

I renamed it to .jpg and .asdf, neither worked

You have to have show file extensions on.

Rename the extension.

Or password protect (encrypt) the zip file, so they can't scan the files in it.

The stupid lab computers don't have fancy enough software to extract a passworded zip and we are forbidden from running our own apps.

Well, if you can't run your own apps, you can't run this exe either.

Otherwise, compress it (say in a .tar format or .tar.gz) and open it with winrar or 7zip. Both should fit on a floppy or usb drive I believe.

getdropbox.com - I use it to transfer stuff between work and home, eliminating the need for a flash drive.

Zip it up, rename to .jpg, set password, put that file in a folder, zip that folder up too and set a password and rename to .jpg as well. This way it wont see the filename at all and wont be able to scan the headers either. (pretty sure it checks the headers, for example exe's always start with MZ)

There are many ways to hide or pass through something silly as Google scan, and programs like that typically it looks at the header (or signature of a file) to determine the file type. You can simply use a Hex editor to edit out the header, try 8 bytes, change the extension and change header/extension back later.

zip it :)

I already have. It looks inside zips.

Not if you PW protect them, which has already been mentioned.

What's also bad is when a client needs a patch and the only thing they understand is email. How the hell am I supposed to explain how to download and view/change extensions when they can barely operate a browser :(

Uh, the thought of emailing them a link didn't occur to you? :)

OP: Try renaming it to file.jpg.vbs to see if it goes through :)

this thread makes me want to punch a baby. How can you be on a tech forum and not know how to change the actual file extension
