Is there a way around Gmail's refusal to send .exe files?

Lifer
I'm trying to mail myself a backup of my project in case my flash drive spontaneously fails tomorrow, but gmail won't let me mail an .exe even if its in a zip archive.

🙁

Rename the extension.

Or password protect (encrypt) the zip file, so they can't scan the files in it.

The stupid lab computers don't have fancy enough software to extract a passworded zip and we are forbidden from running our own apps.

Yup, renaming it would probably work. Another option would be to save it as a different archive format (I just use 7z instead of zip).

Maybe WinRAR will still install on those computers. It just might not be able to make any file associations, but hopefully it'll be able to at least decompress the software to a temp folder, or even to your flash drive.

With that, you could decompress an encrypted RAR file, assuming Gmail will allow an RAR file.

Or else burn the presentation to a CD-RW.

Well, actually, it can be. A decent antivirus will check the file's binary to determine what extension it really should be.
Unless it's a Truecrypt file. 😀
The documentation says that a TC file will appear to be random binary data, with no other indications as to what it should be.

Yeah a serious pain in the shitter.

What's also bad is when a client needs a patch and the only thing they understand is email. How the hell am I supposed to explain how to download and view/change extensions when they can barely operate a browser 🙁

zip it 🙂

I already have. It looks inside zips.

Did you enable extension viewing in folder options and then change the extension?

Download 7zip. I think you can get just the 7z.exe from Sourceforge. Use encryption, the .7z format supports encrypting the filenames, so you can't even list the archive without the key.
