2 1/2 yr old indoor cat, only pet in house, had several instances of vomiting on Sunday, looked quiet and ill on monday, still have vomiting episodes, went to the Vet on monday evening.. got a shot of Amoxicillin, looked better on tuesday morning, drank water, started eating again.. then last night had episode of vomiting 3-4 hours after being given her amoxicillin, had another episode of vomiting this morning a few hours after getting her meds.

She's very quiet, sitting or lying on the sofa.. she hasn't vomited again since this morning, I think she's taken some water but that's about all.

Should she get her next round of amoxicillin?

no house plants here... she is a chewer..usually of rubber shower shoes but I've gotten rid of those.

Vet said she had a mild fever which led him to think more along the lines of a bug of some sort.

I am very worried though, we are both very fond of this cat.

Our cat was sick once because of a spider bite but she went through it ok like we go through a flu. So hopefully it's going to be the same situation and the cat will be ok.

If she won't eat tonight or in the morning, take her back in to the vet. Cats can't tolerate not eating for very long before their livers start going funky. After a day/night of no food, eating becomes more important than antibiotics. If she eats, try the antibiotics again after the food has a chance to digest a bit.

she's resting on the sofa now.. she's actually grooming herself again which is a good sign as she's an OCD groomer.

She tends to get hairballs and I usually give her Eukbana or science diet hairball control dry kibble, with the occasional can of fancy feast.

Possibility of an obstruction. After reading through the thread, I see you mentioned she chews on things. However, I wouldn't think that she'd be grooming herself now.

Vet man handled the belly pretty good, said there wasn't any guarding or signs indicating obstruction
he was leaning more towards some form of gastritis due to the fever.

When we got home I broke down the feeding station area and the litter
box, cleaned everything with hot water and clorox .

Just got her to take a couple quarter teaspoons of ground wet food, mashed mixed with a bit
of her petro malt. she's walking around now rubbing her face on doorways.

Did the vet do any blood tests? Take a fecal sample for testing? What was the reasoning for giving antibiotics? Does the cat have diarrhea?

I seem to remember my vet saying that amoxicillin can cause nausea and vomiting as a side effect. It may be that simple.

No diarrhea, no blood work, this vet is conservative and likes to start with the simplest
solution first, it's less stress on the animal.

The vet gave antibiotics because she had a fever

Yeah your vet is not good. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, which is what your cat has if she's vomiting (and not munching something she shouldn't be) and has a fever. Stool samples in such a case are a must, there is nothing stressful about it for the cat, you simply take the poop to the vet after the cat used the litter box. This allows the vet to make sure she didn't eat anything she shouldn't have that could be affecting her abnormally. Can also check protein, fiber, carb content from the stools. I can't believe your vet didn't ask for these. In such a case it's usually good to get the stools early in case your cat doesn't eat anything more.

Hope she's all better~

 I always have better luck with that by giving after they've eaten.
Is it liquid or pill?

Jean, please forgive me asking the obvious, but did you give her some food with the amoxicillin?

I know vets recommend giving many medicines this way as having some food in their tummy can ameliorate side effects like nausea.

I'd have gotten the vet to give her a shot.

My Mom's husband went to a "name" vet with a sick cat, and they wanted to do all these test, etc, and the cat had a high fever.

Took him to my vet, and he said that anytime a cat has a high fever, there's a xx% (high percentage) chance it's an infection. Shot him up with antibiotics, bingo: New cat by the next day.

And certain cats "take" pills better than they do liquid and vice versa. At least thats the way around our pride here.

Our vet is an older man who could have retired years ago, he keeps his clinic open because he knows he's the only source for affordable animal care in this poverty stricken city. He is committed to the pets of this community. He's provide care for Miss Kitty since she was a kitten, this guy has probably forgotten more about animal care than many young vets will ever know.

He gave her an injection of amoxicillin and pills to take home..He said fever indicates infection, that if it were viral the meds wouldn't do anything but they would provide some protection against secondary bacterial infections that frequently set in after virus.

total cost of the visit was $50.. easily on;y 1/3 of what the local VCA clinic would charge.

She appears to be holding down the bit of food I got into her.. I'll give her more in a bit and try the meds again before bed but mixed with food.
