Is there a "Themes" Faq for Linux. I am so confused trying to skin it!

Hello - I installed Redhat 9 a few days ago and I really like it and I decided to skin the entire thing into some cool anime theme 🙂 Now I noticed it runs Gnome by default which is pretty cool (I tried loading the sessio in KDE and it was exactly the same) and I went to themes.freshmeat.net to look for some anime themes....In the "anime" category I found 198 Themes and I knew that a good portion of them are for linux considering what thet site is geared for....Then I saw a LOT of kinds of Filters. Blackbox, FluxBox, GTK2.0, KDE [that was obvious enouigh] and a lot more.

Which ones are entire skins for my desktop? And a lot of them are for Blackbox and Fluxbox (over half! In fact in Gnome there are only like 2 and KDE only has a few also) and I have no idea what that is.

Could anyone explain to me what I should do? What is each type - are those another kind of graphical interface (Like Window Maker which I am not too fond of and I have to use "Blackbox" or "fluxbox")

And also would it matter whether I goit a GTk+/2/whatever (Isn't that Gnome?) because I remember that Redhat created a standard out of all the different kinds.

Thanks

EDIT:

SHould I try BlackBox or Fluxbox? Do they look like Bluecurve because I must admit i am very fond of the way redhat set it up. Thanks

Most apps in RH9 will use the GTK2 theme, but there may be a few rogues that do not, especially if you install your own software. *box doesn't use GTK at all, so if you try that, you'll need separate Blackbox themes for the window decorations.

Be forewarned that if you get really involved in theming Linux, you will quickly lose any semblance of a life you once possessed. It's a messy and time-consuming business.

Uhm.... If you're running Gnome you probably want Metacity or Sawfish themes for window decorations. You can get quite a few from http://art.gnome.org as well as http://themes.freshmeat.net. As far as application skinning goes (widgets and so forth), you got GTK1, GTK2, and QT. Each having its own skins thus leaving a level of inconsitancy between applications (although I've found a theme at www.themedepot.org for GTK1 and GTK2).

I'm not sure if Bluecurve is window decorations, but both blackbox and fluxbox do not support pixmaps for window decorations, you might want to look into pekwm for a low-resource, fast window manager with pixmap support.

Good luck..
