is there a techincal reason not to make AA-style Li-ION (or Li-S) batteries?

why not make AA and AAA li-ion batteries? and maybe another size that's really thin and flat, for high tech devices? I just think it would be really nice to be able to switch batteries between devices and not have to pay so to buy extra proprietary batteries from the manufacturer...AND still have the wonderfully high power density of Li-ion (or better yet) (lithium sulphur)
 
Li_Ion batteries are fairly volitile without some type of attached circuitry to protect against shorts and overchargin. might be part of it.
