Is there a slideshow option for XP's desktop?

you mean change the background at set/random intervals ?
- winwall, free 3rd party app

or did you mean a screensaver ?
- XP slideshow screensaver is built-in

Or is this something I need to get some software to accomplish?

Windows XP does it...
right-click on your desktop, select Properties/select Screensaver/in the drop down menu under Screensaver select My Pictures Slide Show.
From there you direct it to a folder holding your photos that you want to use as a slideshow.
You can personalize style, speed, etc.

One of the neat things about XP.
