I sold some machinery on eBay a few months back. Buyer paid and we exchanged several communications regarding shipping the item (at their expense). They have since gone "radio silent" and I can't get in touch with them.

The lease on the warehouse where the machinery is stored runs out at the end of the month, so I have been trying to get them to pick this thing up...

here is what is perplexing me now that I am trying to get in touch with them via other means.

1. The website associated with the email address is a place holder ppifibers.com
2. Whois seach for domain returns an admin in Scottsdale AZ (buyer is in CA)
3. Address for admin is same as a scam site
14747 N Northsight Blvd Suite 111, PMB 309 Scottsdale, AZ
there are numerous scam sites associated with this address
https://www.google.com/search?q=14747+N+Northsight+Blvd+Suite+111,+PMB+309&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
however, this may be a default address for Godaddy hosted sites

I have a shipping address they gave so I could help them get a local shipping and the name on the tax records match the name of the person I have been dealing with.

So, on the one hand, I see all these red flags, and on the other hand I have the buyer's name and address and it checks out. I also have the payment in hand and they are responsible for shipping costs.

What gives here? Anyone have a good theory?

At the very least, I suggest you send a letter with delivery confirmation (Or signature confirmation) to the shipping address on file with the address for local pickup. That way when they ding you in 179 days for "item not received" you can put in the delivery confirmation number.

But how can they ding me for that when the shipping is their responsibility?

edit: Might be good defense, I suppose.

They paid you with PayPal right? PayPal doesn't give any protection for local pickup, they only want proof of shipping.

what kind of machinery was it and how much money are you talking about? The way I see it it's their responsibility to come and collect the stuff from the warehouse. Whoever leases the building next will have the right to set it out on the curb for disposal. If it was a scam why would the pay you?

It's one of these: http://www.somatcompany.com/Products/Close-Coupled-Pulpers/

We are talking about $2500

Why would they pay me? I don't know. I am just trying to figure out why someone would buy something, pay for it, make plans to pick it up and then disappear off the face of the earth...

It's way too late now to try to resolve this by the end of the month.

What are you going to do with the stuff when the lease expires in 3 days?

Since you have buyer's address, should have sent a registered letter weeks ago putting them on notice you will dispose of the items if not picked up by April 30, and you will retain their payment as liquidated damages and to offset the cost of disposal. But too late for that now.

Was it clear from the start of the transaction that the stuff had to be out by April 30?

Send a certified letter stating they have to pick up the machinery by the end of the month or they forfeit their money and you'll not be responsible for what happens to the machinery after that.

You're not covered if you don't have proof of shipping. Me going to your house and picking it up is not proof of shipping.
For payments over $250 USD (or local currency equivalent, including shipping and tax) or more, be sure that you have signature confirmation of delivery in addition to proof of shipment (See above). If a buyer files a claim, you must respond to our requests for information as outlined in our communications to you.

When you are not covered:
Items are picked up locally or delivered in person.
You sell services, intangible items, or digital goods.
You receive multiple payments for the same item.
You've received a claim or a chargeback, and the shipped item is found to be significantly different than it was described.
Example: You describe a new laptop, but send a used one.
PayPal Direct Payments
Virtual Terminal Payments
PayPal Business Payments
Items that are not shipped to the recipient shipping address on the transaction details page. If you originally ship the item to the shipping address but the item is later redirected to a different address, you will not be eligible for PayPal Seller protection. We therefore recommend not using a shipping service that is arranged by the buyer, so that you will be able to provide valid proof of shipping and delivery.

I would do this (if the funds have actually cleared)....also, I would NOT spend the money/leave it for time being.
