Aside from specificly digging around for info on specific products on linux pages, is there a way to know if a modem will work with linux or not?

I'll be using Helium Mandrake once I get the system up.

For the most part,

real hardware modems should work fine

cheap winmodems do not

if you get USR external you are definately safe

On the box under requirements it will only list windows OSes if its a winmodem, and Im pretty sure dont buy something with a lucent chipset, cuz its a winmodem.

any external serial modem will worl in linux. External USB modems probably wont. Internal modems are the only ones that you have to worry about checking the packaging on.

any Internal Hardware (best if it's an ISA, I think), and any external that connects with a serial port. USB I don't think works yet, and support for any type of winmodem is very thin.. ie, most won't be able to get it running, if not all.

my advice? get a Supra Express 56k modem. internal or external, it's one of the best supported modems out there.
