Seems like an overly large and complex plane. Would the new naval version of the JSF take over some duties of the F-14?

Also, is there any comparable missle system to the Phoenix in service today in the world? And just how effective is it? Has it been successfully used in real-world A2A attacks?

BTW, the History Channel is running a Modern Marvels episode on the F-14 now...the F-22 is next :D

Check out these sexy pix of the F/A 22.

Anyone agrees with me that that the Raptor is simply the most beautiful fighter ever made?

I disagree :D

F-23 = teh sexay!

Pretty faces don't win battles

The days of close air support are over, at least as far as the aircraft actually being "close". A B-52 loaded with 500 lb JDAMs is much more useful. They could even put a remote control system in the cockpit of the B-52, remove some life support equipment, and increase the bomb load.

An interesting corollary to that fact is that the elimination of the hard part of CAS (dropping the bombs on the enemy from the proper angle, etc.) also eliminates the need to have an Air Force person directing the attack -- the TAC-P. While this is already happening to an extent since the Army is training its own controllers now, it should be interesting to see what happens.
