Is there a reason NOT to buy Maxtor 300GB 16MB drive?

That is a good price. Where did you see that price at?

Other good options are the Hitachi 250gb 8mb for 140. I get great results in HD Tach and Sandra 05. Their Raptor benchmarks aren't that much higher than mine so I doubt the 16mb is at all.
Another is the 200gb Seagate 8MB.

Yes howabout a link?...There are 2 types of SATA Maxtors going around...1 with NCQ which is much better and faster then the other...

Clarification, Office Depot has PATA, not SATA, 300GB 16MB cache drives (DiamondMax 10) for $149.99 no rebates. I almost bought one 2 weeks ago when it was $199.99, so I'm wondering why are the prices falling so much, so fast? Found on my favorite deals site, TechBargains

Mik3y - They did? Haven't seen anything on them. How much and where?

Baked - you've seen the deal, but don't sound too enthusiastic. Why?

Link?

And are the 16MB breed?

Anand's review on them looked good.

I don't know if I would say MAxtor is GARBAGE.

I think WD has better products currently than Maxtor.. I do have multiple Maxtor drives from 40-160 and they have all been great.

Even have a Hitachi (IBM) 80GB that is solid.

Just browse through this forum, go through the pages, you'll find some. People losing up to 3 drives near around the same time. Lots of them croaking. Regardless if they are the 16mb breed, it's still a sign to avoid. I would choose WD or seagate over maxtor at this point.

I just had two Maxtor Hard Drives fail on me. One was an RMA replacement from Maxtor. My faith in Maxtor has dwindled down a lot. I'm going back to my roots, Hitachi. I'm still running a 74GB Raptor though, WD on the other hand is pretty good.

i concur, Maxtor is absolute shit. have personally had 2 of them die on me over the years. i was foolish and bought a 120gb 8mb 7200 one for $49.99 at Frys a while back, just waiting for it to die :/

i've always bought maxtor's and never had a drive fail on me. mind you i bought a lacie external drive tgat crapped out on me when i opened the encloser i discovered it was a western digital.

for the people that have maxtors dying... you may want to tighten up the nut behind the keyboard. i have had mine forever and never i mean never had a problem....

What???? I have two maxtor drives [1 120GB (got at frys for $50) and 1 80GB] and they are still running so I'm wondering how these drives are failing. I have MBM5 running and set to it's monitoring the drives, when I enabled the alarm to be 55C* I noticed the drives easily passed the 55*C mark so when that happened, I just upped the case fan and the temps dropped dramatically. (I have the fan running on slowest speed until I run processor intensive stuff and or HDD intensive stuff. I have only one case fan (thermal take smart case fan 2 4800RPM) and it sure as hell does a good job of getting all the heat out of the case. Possibly overheating the drives?

BTW whats a good max temp for HDDs? I thought 55C* but it could be less or more, just want to clarify.
