Hello, I am trying to backup dvd's and all of a sudden it has taken much longer for my dvd rom to encode than before. Also sometimes it won't spinup which is a pain. Is my drive dying? Is there one really reliable dvd rom out there or are they all the same? I only need a dvd rom I already have a dvd/cd burner. Thanks

Thanks, but I really only need a DVD ROM and not a burner. I remember a while back I saw pioneer slot loading drives which looked really cool. Are those still available? Are they good? Thanks

I have a Pioneer 106S which I just love...

I upgraded to a 120S but after a day put my 106S back in. Its a great drive, I can recommend it more than any other drive I've had. but I don't know where you'll be able to find one.

What's wrong with the 120S?

I'd like to know also...BTW can someone tell me what a normal rate of encoding should be from the dvd? I'm gettin around 4k kb/s which I think is slow, at one point I was getting 10k.

Lite-On, Pioneer, NEC, Panasonic, LG, Sony (usually Lite-On)...all fine.
If you want it to last forever, get a Plextor.
IMO, you're better better killing another , though :)

Try the Toshiba SDM-1912TA. It's a GREAT DVD-ROM drive... fast, quiet, and one of the only DVD-ROM drives I know of that will actually read a burned dual-layer DVD+R DL disc. It's also only $22 bucks.

For a DVD-ROM drive, it also outpaces all my other drives at random-seek times!

All of my optical drives are Liteon - XJ-HD166S DVD-ROM, LTR-40125S CD-RW, and a DVD+-RW drive, which I don't know the model of right now. Not quite the latest and greatest, but it works just fine.
None of the drives ever give me any unusual trouble.

Thanks for the suggestions guys...I'll look into all of them. BTW can anyone tell me what an average rip speed should be when I am encoding a dvd? I honestly have no idea what numbers I should be getting.

Lite-On, Pioneer, NEC, Panasonic, LG, Sony (usually Lite-On)...all fine.

I assume my sony is a lite-on which kinda kills it for me.

Whats your beef with liteon drives? I was looking for drives and I specifically got a lite-on drive because they are good drives. I upgraded from a 4X DVD rom and 12X CDRW to 52X Combo dvd/cdrw drive and I love the drive. I like that it's loud because it shows that it's fast, reads things so quickly...
