Is there a program that will remove the voices from a mp3 file?

A freeware program would be preferable. I searched the winamp plugins but couldn't find anything.

Nero has a Karaoke function which kinda gets rid of the voices just like "Beau" said. Unless the voices are on another channel (which they sometimes are) it's near impossible I would have thought. ;)

This may be a dumb question, but how is it done with regular stereos and stuff? I'm not an audio expert or anything but I thought you could buy stereos with a karaoke feature for a reasonable price. Is it that much more difficult to do with a software player or something?

Most channels are recorded seperately. i.e. Voice and instruments. They are then mixed. When thet have been mixed it's difficult to split them again.

I do a lot of multi track recording, but I'm no sound engineer. However, from what I do know, once tracks are mixed down you can only manipulate frequencies. And since the voice shares frequencies with many instruments I think it would be near impossible to get rid of a voice without getting rid of all but the bottom end bass and the high end cymbals. The voice tends to sit smack in the middle of everything.

Now if there is a program that can do this, umm yeah I'd like to know. Kinda like a Photoshop for sound. Nice idea.

I've always heard it described like this.

Bake a cake. Now try to remove just the eggs.

It's not really possible.

Here's an example for the UNIX player xmms. I'm fairly certain such a plugin exists for Winamp.

Here's one for Winamp.

SpecialK - Did you try this. I'm interested to see if it works. Good post manly. ;)

The winamp one kinda sounds like ass. It's just pulling out the frequencies, which affects the background music as well. It makes it sound pretty distorted and crappy. I tried it on a couple of different tracks.

Haven't tried the first one yet.

This is not possible to do with satisfactory results on 99% of the music out there. I like what someone said - it's like tring to remove the eggs from a cake after it is baked.

Stereos with the "karaoke feature" means they have a microphone input that can be mixed with the sound output, so you can sing along. It doesn't mean that the stereo removes the vocals.

trust me.. it's nearly impossible to separate the music & the vocal track... unless you have an advanced recording studio equipment (and the result is still not perfect)
