Is there a program that will allow me to edit a song?

I want to use a song in a presentation, but the instrumental part is just too long...I want to cut it out or shorten it...can this be done with software?
 
Nero has a wave editor

So, if I have a CD and I want to use a track from it...I can use Nero's wave editor to shorten the track?
Of course I know I would have to copy that track to my HDD first

yes, i have done it before, i used to to shorten the song "Get your filthy hands off my desert" so i could use it on my YTMND post
