Is there a problem with my motherboard, power supply, or not problem at all?

Okay I recently purchased the Epox 8K7A+ Motherboard. Since I haven't recieved my CPU yet I wanted to test the board to make sure it works. So I used my friends CPU, a 1 ghz T-Bird (fsb of 100, old stepping, he has had the cpu for about a year), and his cooler, an Alpha PAL. He normally has full load temperatures approximatly 40-45 C. I took a spare case I had, and put in motherboard, cpu, cooler, and 512 MB of Crucial DDR ram PC 2100. No other peripherals. The power supply was a 235 Watt PS, and I don't know if it is AMD approved or not.

The computer posted, no problem, we went into bios to monitor the temperature, the problem was that in the first minute the temperature rose from 25 C to 50 C, at that point since that temperatrue was higher then his normal full load, we powered down the system to take a look, we then proceded wait for it to cool down, we took off the heat sink, cleaned off the old thermal paste, applied new thermal paste, and reattached the heat sink. We powered it back up and the same thing happened, the temperature rose quickly (approximatly the same amount of time (about a minute)) to 50 C again and would have continued to rise had we not shut it down at that point.

My question is, What is the probelem? the only untested parts of this computer were the ram and the motherboard. The CPU, heat sink, PS, and case had all been used before without problems. I am reasonably sure that the cpu really was at 50 C for it was really hot and took a fairly long time to cool down. The heat sink fan was spinning, and when we were done with these two boots, my friend got scared that we would burn out his cpu, and put it back in his computer where it proceeded to function at perfectly normal temperatures. Also what usually is the problem with non amd power supplies that are used? Do they burn out, just not work, or cause something like this to happen? I really would like to know if I need to RMA my motherboard.

I would try a better PSU with this setup before blaming the mobo. Also, the difference (to touch between say 45*C and 50*C isn't a lot, so it should be taken a little while to cool down from your friends computer too. I think it is very possible that the temperature probe of the two mobos are very different and could be why you are getting such differing temperatures. The second time you made it sound like it hadn't even reached operating temperature yet. That chip shouldn't have much trouble operating clear up to about 70*C, so I would have let it run a little longer to see if it would level off at some reasonable point.

i'm sure the cpu did feal hot but epox boards are notorious for reading the temps too high...chances are you're fine...

i highly recommend you get a more powerful power supply, but as for amd approved, i have never to my knowledge bought one that was and they work fine...i think that's more about marketing than performance

Well it was completly cooled down to room temperature both toimes before we tried, it, and the problem isn't the 45 C vs the 50 C, it is that 45 C is about his max full load, idle is about 38 C, and that 12 C difference is that got to me.

MaxImuMAdVaNtAgE: Can you show me anywhere where that is stated? I don't want to accuse you of lying or anything, I want to get a feel for what reviewers or testers had to say, and what the difference was betweena normal motherboard, and an epox board for temperature ratings.

I will talk to my firend to see if he will let me use his CPU again.
