is there a point to having facebook is there is no wall?

I stopped being active on fb a while ago and closed my wall. I don't want to completely delete it because they have no way of contacting me at all. When you move to a new area, it could be a quick way to reconnect with old peers. There's the option of sending a private message but people rarely use that. People that I meet still add me even though mine is inactive
I also don't get on AIM much outside of work

your thoughts?

Just put a small message on the left under your profile pic saying 'I disabled my wall, please send me a PM'

I don't know
I just felt like closing it at the time... because it was the same few people writing on my wall
they can private message if they wanted to get in touch, couldn't they?

You need the wall for them to put you against before the firing squad can go to work. (union rules ya know!)

yes. It's useful for people to look up your contact information. it's also a good way to share pictures and experiences with your friends.

I hate this new method of communication. Why NOT have private messages? Why carry out a conversation where everyone can see? It's the online equivalent to being on speakerphone in a crowded elevator.

Just seems.. I dunno what it is about it that I don't like, because it's really similar to an online message board, but I know that I don't like it.

Every once in a while I get angry and deactivate my facebook all together because I just don't like people. Then I always reactivate it when my gf asks me to.

my email address is in my profile and I update my "networks" so I guess they can figure out where I'm living or school I'm at
however, I don't post pictures or make any status updates

if your friends want to contact you they will. facebook appeals to certain types of people, and if you don't fall into that, don't feel "forced" to use it.

the point of the wall is quick communication. people are lazy, and if they don't see a post on the wall.. they will get flustered and just forget it. do you care if these types of people contact you or not? that should answer your question.

Mr Gorbachev... Tear down this wall!

I think Reagan has proved that walls suck. Kudos to you for taking yours down!

I know why I hate the wall and not forums, it's not because it's public but because of the fact that they are 1 way conversations. If I ask a big question on your wall and then you answer me on mine, everyone else just gets half a conversation.

But this assumes the wall was created with conversations in mind, to me it looks like their original intention was something similar to signing yearbooks.
