I've been looking at this website for some time and it's my understanding that .rm files are played using RealMedia Player. But that thing is god awful and I would never install it.

Is there another program that will play .rm files? Thought I post this before I hit the hay :) 6am PST.

RealPlayer/RealOne are the only programs that will play it.....:disgust:

RealMedia is evil.

well, i was searching on google prior to posting here and found this.
What do you guys think?

How long do you guys think it would take to do a 600 .rm file on a PII 400mhz, 128mb ram?

I still have the old install file for Realplayer 8, thankfully. At least with that one, you can take the time to uncheck 100 boxes so the thing doesn't take over your computer. But with the newer versions of realplayer, they don't even give you a choice.

I think there's a winamp plugin where you can play realmedia files in winamp as well.

Well, I thought I try out the new quote feature since I'm at it and see if I did it correctly :)

Here's the skin that I found which supposedly allow winamp to play real media files.

But a user notes:
"You didn't say that real player quicktime and media player needed to be installed in your pc for this to work!!!!"

I further investigation and find at the author's website this:
"Can I uninstall Real Player now?
No. You should not uninstall real player, as this plugin uses real player components to play real audio and video files. At max you can delete files in Program Files\Real\RealPlayer. This plugin only depends on the files in Program Files\Common Files\Real.

If you accidentally delete some files that is needed, while playing ra files, you will be prompted to auto update site or asked to reinstall real player"

Well, it looks like you can back up that directory and uninstall real player. I think I'll try this and report back. Still looking for other possible plug ins for winamp.

The author of the plug-in notes that it can work with RealAudio 6,7, and 8.

I'm wondering if I could just try to find the oldest RealAudio version listed above. Will it still read .rm files properly? That's my main concern.

Real is not bad except for their friggin' player.

I wish they had a separate codec released but then the company will really die once they do that.

well, it gets better!

As I was browsing the software, application, programming forum, a user was asking some questions regarding RP7 vs 8.
And he kindly gave this site to download older versons of RP.

Awesome - thanks! RP One is the worst thing on my computer! It keeps re-enabling automatic startup of all kinds of crappy utilities to auto-update and, no doubt, spy on me. Grrrrr.

Oh that kicks so much ass! I'm so happy to be able to download an old version of RP! Heheh I will get them all NOW so that they'll never be gone. That's a great idea for a site too!

If it was encoded into an RM format, I don't care what it is, then it isn't worth watching.

amen to that. if people want me to watch their videos, they will have to find a non-crappy way of getting it to me.

Has anyone successfully tried this?

I'm busy getting ready for finals so I won't be able to test it out until 2 weeks from now at the earliest. Planning on using the school's lab because they reimage the hard drive daily :)
