Is there a perfect wireless g router?

From reviews of various routers it seems like there isn't a single wireless router on the market that doesn't have the problem of frequently crashing/freezing/rebooting to at least some users.

My dlink does it and it annoys the heck out of me. Am I doomed or is there a router out there that doesn't have this problem at all?

Cisco Aironet. Specifically, the AIR-AP1231G.

Or the Linksys WRT-54G, which is 1/5 the price of the Cisco.

Well that is an AP, not an AP/router (wireless router) combo but that doesn't really matter. It's not a realistic recommendation unless your doing very well and don't mind spending an enterprise price on what is probably a consumer role.


I've never had or installed a wireless router that reboots/crashes/freezes. That includes Speedstream, Buffalo, Netgear and Linksys gear in the budget sector. Obviously I've read about others experiences so I am not saying it doesn't exist. Given the number of these devices on the market and in peoples homes it's an exception however, not the rule. So I don't know what a perfect wireless router is but if the question is "Are there wireless routers that don't randomly reboot/crash/freeze?" then the answer is yes. Most of them.

my linux gateway has never crashed yet, I think that wireless routers are crap. get a reouter and an AP, you'll be much happier. I use a v5 WRT54G (which is a craptastic router) for my AP

When I ran an OpenBSD router/WAP it didn't crash unless the hardware was bad (which happened often enough on an old Dell p133 ). I miss it.

My Linksys WRT54G (v4/v5 can't remember) doesn't crash.

The only time I've had *any* router reboot/crash was with a D-Link that had a buggy DNS cache feature. Disabling DNS cache made it just as rock solid reliable as any other router I've used.

Now I've had some wireless routers with terrible range, but that's a whole other issue.

I would say that 95% of the Routers do not crashing/freezing/rebooting.

Yap, some users (that are Not perfect ) might have such troubles.

Might help analyzing their pattern of Usage, rather than the Router's.

Thanks for the replies.

So I'm gathering from your replies that if I went out and got a decently rated router/AP, most likely it won't have any stability problems... But then again, I know that my usage pattern does cause my dlink to crash all the time. Think I'm better off going for a non dlink device? Just to switch things up a bit?

I've been using a Linksys WRT54g v1.0 since they came out. It has never crashed /froze/rebooted. That's not to say that they are all perfect, but I think the majority of them work very well. So you are either very unlucky or you are asking something from these routers they were not meant to do. That's my 2 cents. Good luck!!!

My Linksys WRT54GS is rock solid, but I make no guarantees about the newer revisions that are not Linux-based.

I've had several WRT54G model 1.0's -- they've all hung over time. Once in a couple of months typically. A couple of them also had power supplies that failed over time. The third-party DD-WRT firmware for the WRT54G has a scheduled re-boot feature which might help. Cooling / avoiding configurations that cause any of these to heat up might help. My D-Link DGL-4300 has never hung / crashed.

Hey, I am not sure this is your problem, or even if it was the true solution for mine, but I would get a crash every 2-4 weeks, and it was really getting on my nerves. My burner was having problems making clean burns too. I by chance had bought a Belkin UPS with voltage regulation, for both spikes and brown out, and now I haven't had a problem for about two months with either. I did not change any settings or anything like that.

The burner would be more in question, I had changed so many settings with that and changed he cables, still... Then I just gave up, bought the UPS for a seperate reason, then all the sudden, all my problems have gone away... Don't know if it really was power related, but I have heard that it can effect equipment, even if it isn't as obvious as a power out...

Woohoo! I noticed that there was a new firmware out for my DI-524. I installed it and my wireless router doesn't reboot anymore! It use to reboot about every 30 min...

Edit: According to its log, it's gone 29 hours so far without rebooting.

My cheap $40 Linksys router that i upgraded to Hyperwrt firmware has not froze or crashed in months... and i use bittorrent heavily.

I have a DLINK 4300. Its the "gaming router" that has a gigabit switch in it along with wireless. I like it because it can support a lot of connections at one time and remains rock solid. A couple of older routers I had weren't able to stand up to heavey torrent use.
