I once looked for a more modern version of it, but nothing has copied the original.

Some recommendations:
Pocket Tanks is free and amusing, but isn't exactly of the original's scale.
Warheads is also amusing and is practically Scorched Earth in space.

what about Worms reloaded? Not the scale you're looking for but probably the latest commercially released game in that style.

I've played this over the net with a friend before. He's an old friend and we both played the original when we were pretty young. It's pretty much as the title implies, Scorched Earth with a 3rd dimension. It was actually really quite fun and the physics were done quite well (amazingly without PhysX.😉)

That said, I don't think it covers the issue in the OP as there was really no game matching service. Now that you mention it though this would be the perfect kind of game for random online match-ups.

Ahh, the good old days of Scorch.exe. I hated it when someone used the nuke when the bombs were set to the Large explosion size. That poor PC took at least a full minute to draw the explosion sequence. 😀

There are lots of active servers and lots of active development. Level and weapon design is easy and is done via XML.
