Is there a maximum file size I can transfer to a External Drive?

I have a 6b file on my laptop I need to transfer to a friend's machine. I've tried two external drivers (one was 20GB and the other was 160GB) and when I try to move the file from my laptop to either drive I recieve the error that there is not enough space. I then tried to transfer from my laptop over the network to a local machine w/ the external hdd hooked up and recieve the same error. What is the problem?
