I've got 2x250 WD drives and im using the promise controlller it came with, thinking my older one couldnt handle it. It boots up, detects each drive as it should....but in windows, it only detects one drive as the full 250(232) and the other as 131gb.....what gives? I was under the impression there was no "limit" on hard drive controllers. is this software or hardware....or user error? any tips are appriciated, im missing 100 gb!! lol

What OS?

What version BIOS version on Promise card?

Did you use the UPDATED 48-bit LBA mode driver?

WINXP, latest bios(first tried the version that came on the card, which they dont even list on their website, then flashed to the latest version on promises website)

I cant seem to get any driver to install, windows only wants to use it crappy one from back in 2001.....any suggestions on this? If i do uninstall winxp automatically installs the one it has, w/o letting me choose a different one. any suggestions?

You should be able to force the driver. Just manually go in there and update the driver and point it to the new one and force it.

Do you have the drives set up on the same cable with one as master and one as slave?

I have tried to force it, it tells me that it doesnt like it and is using the one it has.....yes both drives were on the same cable, one master one slave.....i tried swapping one drive off to my motherboard, and the other leaving on the controller....the one that worked before, works now....i dont get it, is it possible for 1/2 a drive to fail?

Dumb question, but... are you sure both drives are good? IE, try them individually in another system and make sure they both show up/format as 250GB drives. Maybe you got a disk with a bad platter.

If WinXP doesn't accept the drivers, it could very well be
that your BIOS/Motherboard does not support 48-bit LBA mode.
(WinXP generally overrides what the BIOS says anyways)

I would have to agree with Matthias99 and see if they work without
the controller to eliminate that possiblity.
