Is there a hearing/sleeping measuring test?

I'm having a harder time hearing people. Also, I can no longer sleep more than 4 hours continuously unless it's raining. I think this problem started when I was in Afghanistan, Korea, Africa and a few other places a couple of years ago. I think the hearing issue may be due to being so close to an airfield or ordinances going off but the sleeping issue I don't know how to analyze. Sometimes when I sleep, I can 2 hours or 4 hours max. Every single time. This just started happening naturally one day. When there is white noise like rain, I can sleep much longer, 7 hours. Any (former) soldiers have this problem? I realize the hearing issue may be permanent but this sleeping problem is really bothersome.

You should talk to your primary care doctor about these issues, not some forum.

Sleeping may require some white noise;

they have sleep tests that you can participate in to determine what issues you may have.

I'd like to research the issue before going to the doctor and talking to him in layman's terms. I'd like to know what I'm talking about so we can speak in the vernacular rather than him trying to "translate" what I'm saying...

Could you be more specific about the tests? Also, my wife can sleep for days (exaggeration), especially when she's having her period. No white noise needed.

FWIW, I can't sleep in dead silence either. I love white noise, always have a fan running in the bedroom while I sleep. My favorite is rain, or the shower running. Kinda funny, the only way I can sleep when I get really wasted and have the spins (which hasn't happened since college) is on the floor in the bathroom with the shower on - for some reason I don't spin then.

Thanks. I hope these are covered by regular insurance. And I hope there are remedies, not just results, for the hearing (doubtful) and sleeping...

I've had several hearing tests over the years...I've been exposed to a shit-ton of loud noises in my life...not surprisingly, I've lost quite a bit of hearing...especially in the conversational ranges...

(at least that's what I keep telling my wife when I ignore her) :p

As for sleeping...my back is so fubar'd, I rarely sleep more than 3-4 hours at a time...but I HAVE to have soft music playing in the bedroom when I sleep. Otherwise, every little noise and I'm awake.
(yes, that COULD be from the time I spent with Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.)

Alcoholic beverages with dinner, even wine, cause some people to be wide awake after just four hours of sleep.

I've noticed that, for the past 2 weeks now i'be been sleeping 8 hours again. My wife, son & I are in st. Martin, Netherlands Antilles now and I slept 9 hours last night. Looks like everything is returning to normal.

I'm no expert but I wonder if this is partially due to PTSD. Like when you were in those war areas were you practically sleeping with the thought that a bomb might hit you any moment? After a while I'd imagine sub consciously, you bring that with you.

Yes, it must be PTSD. These days Everything is caused by PTSD. I am so sick of everybody blaming everything that goes wrong on PTSD.

I'm not saying that PTSD doesn't exist, but damn it doesn't cause every little problem.

The same applies to ADD, ADHD and all of those other BS catch all excuses for bad behaviour.

glad your issue has improved

I've been sleeping with a fan going in the background for at least a couple years now

helps making any other background noise less noticeable

White noise machines are also available, iirc.
