Is there a good reason to get AM2?

Since it seems that Conroe is going to eat up any AM2 cpu, is there any reason to get an AM2 cpu when it comes out?

Unless AMD offers significantly lower pricing on their processors, or official Conroe benches don't show same advantages as the "previews" or if Conroe processors don't overclock well or if Intel continues to price their overclocking boards at $200, then there is no reason to buy AM2 over Conroe.

I thought the pricing would be fair for Conroe. $300-some for the Opty 170 equivalent.

Just wait for reviews with AM2 Vs Conroe, from reputable sites like Anandtech (obviously) etc. At the moment it doesn?t look promising for AMD from what we know and have already seen, however things may change.

I?m still buying into s939 ATM, i?ve just recently received my new motherboard today (DFI eXpert Venus), and it wasn?t cheap. Now I need to buy a new GFX card as I don?t have a PCI-e variant. My plan is to stick with what I already have and just purchase a new GFX card, then upgrade at the end of the year, be it Conroe or AM2 (which ever is the better purchase "although it will probably be Conroe"). Also by then we should see some good performing (Lower Latency) DDR2 RAM being produced, and good stable performing motherboards that are able to OC quite well.

QFT. There's a lot of speculation but in reality nobody will know FOR SURE until chips are available in the retail channel and in the hands of enthusiasts.

No, AM2 is going to be one of the bigger dissapointment in recent memory; AMD won't be back in the game until 07, when quad core K8Ls will be rolling out; and there is no guarantee that even then AM2 will ever support K8L, quad core, or their NGMA slated for 08. Plus, AM3 is now rumoured to replace it a year later.

Did you ordered the Venus? Are you going SLI? if not just get a normal nF4 Ultra-D and save some money. :)

yeah presumeably k8l is only guaranteed to run on socket F. it does have all the extra pins after all.

that said, no one really will need quad core and it would proably be ridiculously expensive. the am2 prices were just leaked, and well if its $1300 for an fx62 then a quad core i'd imagine would be $1300+ (assuming it was not an FX chip, but if they did make a quadcore it would probably be an fx, just like the kentsfield conroe chip is an EE chip)
