I tried to download Acronis Image 8.0 onto my new win x64 Pro and it just won't install. Checked its web site sure enough it's not suportive of x64 and now I'm litlle bit nervous because I normally have all of my drives on my other PCs ghost imaged on external drives.

You should be able to do it though the DOS version of Ghost but if you're going to be copying data across a network or using external (USB) drives it's going to be more difficult. I never got Ghost to 'see' an external USB drive. Copying to a network store is easy enough as long as your NIC is supported in Ghost or you can get the proper drivers.

Your best bet is to install a 2nd hard drive in your system and dump an image of your current OS drive to the 2nd drive.

Yes I can get another hdd since I have room. How do you do that? Example: Just simply drag c: to g: (g: being a new hdd). Something went wrong with c: I can always boot it from g:. Correct?

Well, if you've got both drives in the same system then just boot with the Ghost CDROM (make sure your system is set so the CD is before the HD's in boot order). I'm not sure which version of Ghost you've got. I know Ghost2003 will boot to a command prompt but Ghost9 boots to a recovery process. If you've got the right version it will boot to a command prompt. From there just change to the \Support directory and run ghost. It will launch and it's pretty simple from there.

Choose Drive to Image option. Choose source drive. Choose destination drive (I believe it has to be formatted). Start image dump. I haven't done this in a while but IIRC that's the process.

I think he wants to take a snapshot of the whole drive (so he can be back up and running instantly if something gets hosed), not just back up his data.

Acronis works. Ghost will too. Just use the boot disk of those programs.
