ATOT seems to have a higher proportion of crazy lately. I don't mean the usual questionable decisions such as terrible puns, extreme social awkwardness, or bromance, I mean absolute batshit insanity.

Maybe we should institute a post verification system, but instead of generating CAPTCHAs it should ask things like "are dragons watching your thoughts?"
 
What do you have against differing opinions? Think about it, if everyone is rational, who will you make fun of?

I'm not going to post examples, the people I have in mind already know they're insane so a callout would be pointless. Besides at least one of them is probably going to show up in here by the time the thread has run its course.

Oh and I have no problems making fun of rational opinions. Those are actually the most fun because they have actual meaning, and meaning can be explored, subverted, or stood on its head. Raw insanity is as unmanageable and meaningless as the void, and just as useful.

You are wrong. Insanity and genius are very closely related. If the troubled can't explain their vision, perhaps the slightly less crazy will have insight. It's all about perspective. What you describe as "rational opinions, " I often find boring, unintuitive and, uninspired.

FWIW I'm mostly independent with a strong libertarian streak and very conservative economic views. Which means I'm completely insane to many people.

I dont know about everyone else here, but I'm uppity from being out of work. Also uppity hearing tons of other people saying they are finding jobs.
And its mid march and I have only lost 5 pounds this year.

Thats my excuse.

:hmm: I hadn't really noticed a difference, shorty. Actually I'd thought you were a little angrier than normal lately, but I wasn't thinking of you when I made this thread.

In fact, so far only one other person person (maybe) shares my opinions on our gas leak. Maybe I'm the crazy one, noticing things that nobody else blinks at.

Discussion Club seems like a more high-brow place, is that more to your liking?

In my experience most people are downright incapable of talking purely about ideas, forget wanting to do that regularly. Example: practically every single time I use the word "efficiency" in regard to anything that's not purely technical people assume I'm talking about "cutting corners and/or firing people," when I simply meant "the ratio of the work done or energy output by a person, machine, etc., to the energy supplied to it." So then they take that presupposition and assume they know exactly what I'm proposing, when in reality I'm proposing something completely different. They'd know that if they bothered to keep reading/listening, but as soon as they hit that trigger word they're off and running, reality be damned.

You misunderstand. Ideas by themselves have no flavor. They require context and cultural reference to be interesting. The Discussion Club is rife with literal ninnies and boring. Your example is representative of online culture. I'm as guilty of it as anyone except when I make an effort. It's only natural that our ideas and opinions are colored by our respective cultures and backgrounds but, online culture tends to over simplify and seek the broadest definitions without making an effort to clarify.

Not really. You haven't met enough insane people. Most of them aren't that intelligent, they are just mad. Theres the odd intelligent one but taking the group as a whole I'd say the "headbutting the wall and screaming at the moon" ones brings the average down.
