Is there a firefox extension for displaying pages side-by-side?

Like in Eclipse, for instance. You can drag editors around to look at two different files side-by-side at the same time. With a widescreen monitor that'd be a really useful feature for Firefox.

Yep - that'd pretty much be the best option. You'd have to have a url bar for the second page anyway, so why not just have a whole new instance?
