Is there a digital camera that has no delay when pressing the flash button?

it's time for me to upgrade my canon s200 ($289) digicam b/c i'm tired of how it takes years for it to focus before i can take a picture. sometimes i want to take a picture of my cat doing something funny and the camera takes like 5-10 seconds to focus... it's too late already. anyone have any recommendations on digicams that have very short focusing delays or do they still take around that long?

dslr for no delay for real
higher end cams like sony v-3 for low delay
btw, its prob. not taking 10 seconds, but it may feel like it, but if flash is used, it might be close.

5-10 seconds to focus? Nothing will take that long anymore practically. If you like Canon you could go with the SD300. I personally like the Sony P100. If you want to use your compact flash, you could get the Canon S410.

A lot of P&S digicams that I've tested have this problem under low light.. even for my Canon G5.. probably not 5-10 seconds, but enough delay to ruin the shot

There is a way though.. set focus lock to infinity so everything is in focus.. but you do lose a lot of flexibility

If you want fast focus, buy a dslr with decent lenses. Nothing has instant focus, because it takes mechanical movement to focus on a subject. If you know what you're doing, you can always use manual focus on dslrs, which is faster than autofocus most of the time.

Yep, but nothing is going to take 10 seconds to focus

i duno i guess im exaggerating but i am positive it takes at least 5-7 seconds sometimes to focus, especially in low lighting. the s200 is a pretty old digicam... about 3-4 years old now so don't be surprised! im not familiar with dslr technology... gotta look that up.

How do you like the DSC-V3?

Reviews are mixed but the sample shots look great to me....

I love it. The sensor is obviously no DSLR sensor, but I'm happy.

Dude there is an EASY way around that, just find something at the the same depth and lock the focus, and just follow around the friggin cat and SNAP the pic when he does it.

Maybe the cat is just hard to focus on. In certain lightings, I find my DSLR finds it hard to lock focus onto the cat. Black fur makes it hard. It's easier to aim for their face (eyes, nose) since it stands out.

In manual focus, it's not an issue. :)

That's just how it works, although I'm sure there are cameras that are better than the 5-10 seconds you cite.

If you really want to minimize it without pressing the shutter half way, you're going to have to use manual focus mode - which is tedious on anything but a DSLR.

There are a lot of higher end cameras that aren't quite at SLR level, but have a lot of functionality and are very responsive on the shutter. Go to your local large electronics store and ask to try out the middle-higher end ones, not the tiny cute ones that are really meant for a day out with your buddies.
