the new ones are supposed to be out anytime now. There is a super slim model that's very similar to the iPod Touch. I haven't really looked into them since I try not to get excited about anything until its out. But IIRC...they said late October for launch??

Intersting. Maybe I will hold off then and see what the new line brings (and if the old line goes on sale). That link is for the 7, which is a bit too big for my use I think (I will be taking on the bus daily too).

I never understood why Archos never made it big in the US. I love my old 100gb Archos 5 DVR. These tablets are cheap (in cost) and are actually pretty damn decent.

Yeah I can't decide on size yet. 5" SEEMS like it should be the right size, but then I see somebody holding a 7" in a video and it looks perfectly fine for use on the bus etc.
Wish these were sold locally that I could play around with one. Hmm wonder if BB has em...

Archos has a bad rep, I'd stay away, wait for a decent company to release something.

I've been reading MANY mixed reviews. Seems people either LOVE or HATE the devices. Seems their support is completely useless, that seems unanimous.

One thing I've learned is that those mixed reviews mean something, every time I've taken a chance on a device or gadget with those kind of reviews, I've gotten burned.
A used iPod Touch or refurb is a hell of a lot more functional, Android was never intended to be used outside of a phone OS at this time, the coming versions (Gingerbread+) will be much better at what you want.

I'm not bashing the iPod..just seems like the OP was looking for something more tabletish

Yeah something I guess between the sizes of the iPod Touch and the iPad would be ideal (5-7"). I don't like the Apples, as I dont like non-expandable RAM, and quite honsestly, I don't like the iTunes store etc.
Best Buy does seem to have Archos (at least online) so maybe I'll poke my head in there and see what the Archos is like with my own hands.

No one has liked their Archos device that's posted here, they talk about it, use it for a while and sell it rather quickly.
I really do try to be platform neutral, but the iPod Touch is a hell of a device. You can find 3rd party programs to use with it if you don't like iTunes, and honestly I don't find iTunes that hard to work with, you can drag & drop etc...

i think since the ipod came out, there hasn't been many competitors that have done it well.
You could argue with the MP3 player you got better prices from other manufacturers, but the form factor, ease of use (click wheel honestly demolishes everything that came at it) just could not be beat.
The iPod Touch is still something that will be hard to challenge. And like Apple advertises it, it's a very capable gaming device. I think it does everything quite well and offers smartphone capabilities essentially.

No one has done it like the iPod Touch. The "Archos" and such small tablets don't have access to the market.
i'd rather have a JB ipod touch 4g. the market for android is too fragmented.
but i must say the ipod touch 4g is really poor quality - TN panel - weak battery - metal back gets hot. no mute switch.

Wow. Out of every comment here, I'm surprised no one mentioned the fact that Archos insists on using Resistive Touch panels. Seriously. None of their devices have capacitive screens. That means it feels sluggish and less responsive. I've never, NEVER in my life met a resistive screen that acted anywhere as accurately or as functional as a capacitive.
I wanted to get the Archos 5, but when I went to play with it at Best Buy, that screen made me cry on the inside. Seriously, it was like playing with my old LG Voyager. I'll never recommend Archos until they commit to using quality screens.

Resistive is the least of it's problems which is why no one mentioned it. There really is no good competition to the iPod Touch at all and won't be until Google allows non-phones to be able to access the market.
