I'm played around with most of the majors - they all charge far too much and provide far too little in the free versions. I'm tried Gramps, which is at least open-source, but it's clunky, ugly, and doesn't have the databases behind it.
My wife used Ancestry to trace her lineage back hundreds of years and she is the only one to have used it in the entire family. It has powerful & automated searching tools at its disposal. Well worth the money if you want to spend a few weeks/months delving in to your family history.
I used Ancestry a while ago to find family. I was able to see ship manifest of when they came into the US and who was with them. I also got to see where they were at certain points in the past with the Census.
