Is there a cool watch that does something else useful?

I'm sure it's the same for a lot of you guys.

I gave up wearing watches years ago. I keep them - one that an ex-GF bought me, one that a passed-away uncle got me, the first watch I bought on my own paycheck, one that a friend's widow gave me, etc - as memento's, some of which are prominently displayed, but I've not actually worn them in years, and am unlikely to do so.

But still, every time I see a cool watch, I'm like "Man... I want that".

And there's the rub. There's still merit for the watch as jewellery - but for me, it's such an invisible part of my wardrobe in general that it's got to do a lot more in order to offset that constriction on my wrist.

Is there a resolution for my conundrum?

Suggestions, jibes, propositions, etc invited.

I have a casio pathfinder. Compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, alarms, world time that synchs every night, 5 months of runtime on a full charge if I ever find myself trapped in an underground cave that is completely dark.

I was in the same boat a few years ago, then I decided to give watches a second try on a whim. So I bought a $200 Seiko (similar to this but pure black) and started wearing it daily. The first week or two I had to make an effort to put on the watch. After a while it became second nature.

I find having the time accessible at the "flick of a wrist" far more convenient than fishing my cellphone out of my pocket. Now my wrist feels naked if I leave the house without a watch on.

Watch = one of our only real manbling items (sunglasses being the other). I consider manbling to be an accessory with a utilitarian purpose.

Buy this if you're looking for ultimate usefulness, may not get you the laidease, but damn it's cool!

Usually it's very much to hand in my case. No harder really than moving my hand.

Yeah, and that's kind of the problem the way I see it. If I were to buy a watch, it'd be less in the class of those watches and more in line with something like this, but it is still just manbling in the end. The difference to me with e.g. custom-commissioned luggage and a watch is that the former still has a primary purpose, and is still a far more used / visible part of your wardrobe. My bling gotta have purpose.

Yeah... I think I'll let someone else take that 😛

If I were a mountaineer, maybe. Not really for walking around town 😀

Hm..

I can see divers being good for diving.

Chronograph... it's nice to have a stopwatch on your wrist sometimes. You don't really notice until you have one though.

GMT watches if you travel a lot (can keep track of ~3 timezones normally).

Also... I keep my cellphone in my pocket all the time, too. But ever since I started wearing watches, it's become such a chore to dig it out of my pocket on the rare occasion the time isn't on my wrist.

I've wanted a Sony MBW-150 for years. It lets you sense the call with your ringer off (hard to miss a vibration on your wrist), then lets you see the caller ID to decide to answer, then lets you reject the call without your company even knowing that you checked! It also displays text messages, current track, etc. It can play/pause/skip tracks without risking dropping your phone. It will alarm if it loses connection with your phone so you don't leave it somewhere. Amazing gizmo, IMO.

I guess no one remembers the video game watches? 😛

Haven't used a Sony phone in years. Does it work with anything else? Is there a classier version?

People created packages to get most functions on WinMo and Android. I read an article this morning about Ford Sync and more devices pushing for MAP support in more phones (message access profile).

Looks like Sony made a new and much cheaper iPod nano-like device with most of the same functions for Android phones. Makes me think that Apple plans something similar with the iPod nano.

I'd rather have something that looks like a watch though.

I have a heart rate monitor watch.

Tells time, has stopwatch feature, and tells me what my heart rate is when I work out, so I know I'm in the zone.

There is a watch with raditation detector some guy in Prague found a radioactive rod at a childrens playground cople weeks ago

Some pretty cool, albeit completely unnecessary stuff here:

http://open-tube.com/20-geek-watches-that-are-must-watch/

This is kind of the problem, in that when you look for 'watches which do something else' it's invariably sports. Which I don't do (at least nothing which needs a watch). Or games. Which I don't really play (not even on an iPhone / Windows Phone).

As I said, if I was considering pure man-bling I'd actually go for a tasteful yet appropriately man-blingy watch - but I would find it pretty hard to justify, as I pretty much know that after a couple of wearings it's going into its box.

Something to do with phones might work, but the watches I've seen so far are kinda lame and I'm not sure they work with Windows Phone 7. A watchphone seems like a good idea, but I'm almost certain it's not in practice.
